Newer Quad running slower than a 256K Single core

I had been running the pc for a while on the XP Home edition with very, very nice results with recent month or month half the computer responds very slowly from initial boot of the OS to reaching the desktop. Transition and opening applications can yield more than the computer can handle, stalling as if look 'for resources'.

I had googled the motherboard, finding some issues for the PCI to ACPI which I had originally had a ! for the whole time, now I have found a few 'possible solutions' and drivers are added but never on a fresh installation or from driver's gotten from the manufacturer's Web site (Asus). :(

Sadly, my delayed response has lead me here. I have made a memory upgrade since the original build but the responsiveness was pleasing upon first install. A newer modular energy 80+ PS has been added moving up in wattage also. But the slowness had occurred before the move in PS.

The responsiveness dwindled and fell some time after the purchase of matching pair 2GB, CPU-Z will show only one of the set since I had thought the second was faulty and the first ran fine without it. I have ran memtest+ a single cycle without any errors following.

As mentioned, the setup ran very nice. Now it pains to turn it on. I run off a single core IBM and smaller FSB that will startup better than ever, part due to UltimateDefrag and reading through the user manual and manipulating the files and placement (love to read more on this if anyone wants to throw in a link on defrag performance, etc. <off subject>).

All I can say is to go back to barebones, 1 stick RAM and unplug all perpherals, re-install XP and motherboard drivers, then start adding things back. I know it's a royal pain but with all the changes who knows what the cause is.

    Hi

Is this a new clean install or an upgrade install of the OS, in Device Manager do you have any yellow ! marks at all, if so what?

If you boot into Safe Mode is the PC more responsive?

    thanks, good read!

I haven't any exclamation marks in Device Manager but while I was there I looked at USB and then also PCI entries asking for an updated driver. I ended up finding many, at least three or four drivers to be updated. Once that had happened the responsiveness came back to the Asus. Seems to be running well again.
