Only way to get one now is to order the 600$ and up deals (that include useless crap, and stuff like 3-5 games and what not). The console is a next generation console (with the Nintendo revolution and the PlayStation 3 coming out next year). The console takes use of HDTV 720p 1080i TV's and feature's stuff like wireless controller(s) and multimedia experiences.

The new xbox, xbox 360, is pretty much just an xbox with better graphics. It's price is $599.99 last time I checked. Depending on when your son's birthday is, you'll probably have to preorder it on the internet. Now, your qestion on is it worth it: That is all personal opinion. I, myself, IF I puchase a new sysytem it will be the ps3, and that is a big IF. If your son is a big gamer, you should look at a gaming pc for him, rather than a console.

Thank's all. I my self would rather spend that kind of money on building a new PC. He's gameing all the time now. I think like Adrynalyne said (Myself, I'd wait until the preorder madness is over and the product is released. Then buy it once the bundle nonsense is over). Thanks again Chuck

Heres abunch of info on it Xbox 360 pricing revealed: $299 and $399 models due at launch

[UPDATE] The 360 gets two spins: the $299 non-backwards compatible "Core System" and the $399 package with 20GB HD, controller, headset, HD cables, and remote control.
As the Big Three (Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo) planned their business tactics for the next-generation console wars, none have been willing to divulge their strategies, lest competitors get the scoop. All that was left was for industry media, fans, and analysts to speculate on what would be of the new consoles.

In its quest to get the console out in time for the holiday season, Microsoft hasn't exactly kept the shutters drawn on its secrets regarding its next-gen contribution: the Xbox 360. Pictures of the console surfaced before its debut on MTV, its name was exposed before the company could spin it itself, and the prospect of standard wireless controllers came with no strings attached.

Today, Microsoft laid down new facts about its upcoming console at the Games Convention in Leipzig, and they sounded awfully familiar to analyst predictions and forum posters' speculations.

Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 will be released in two SKUs, the "Xbox 360 Core System" and the "Xbox 360." The two products will be sold at $299 and $399, respectively. The two systems break down as follows:

    Xbox 360 Core System - $299 (299 Euros, 209 GBP)
    •Xbox 360 console
    •Wired controller
    •Detachable faceplate
    •Xbox Live Silver membership
    •Standard AV cables

    Xbox 360 - $399 (399 Euros, 279 GBP)
    •Xbox 360 console
    •20GB detachable hard drive
    •Wireless controller
    •Wireless Xbox Live headset
    •High-definition AV cables
    •Ethernet cable
•Xbox 360 Media Remote Control (limited time)
    •Detachable faceplate
    •Xbox Live Silver membership

Peter Moore, Xbox corporate vice president of worldwide marketing and publishing, who spoke with GameSpot, reiterated that the Xbox 360 is still on schedule to launch simultaneously in North America, Europe, and Japan this holiday season. Details on the specifics of the Japanese release will be disclosed at this year's Tokyo Game Show, which begins September 16.

Microsoft has confirmed that the "Core System" will not be backwards compatible out-of-the-box. In order to play current-generation Xbox games, owners of the bare-bones system will have to purchase the detachable hard drive. It is unclear whether or not backwards compatibility will work with the smaller-capacity 64MB memory cards.

Moore explained that the idea behind the two choices came from "lessons learned from the first generation [of Xbox], but perhaps more importantly to provide the gamer with choices in pricing as applicable to their gaming habits." In addition, gamers will be able to select from a range of peripherals available at launch:

    • Faceplate ($19.99, 19.99 Euros, 14.99 GBP)
    • Hard Drive (20 GB) ($99.99, 99.99 Euros, 69.99 GBP)
    • Memory Unit (64 MB) ($39.99, 34.99 Euros, 22.99 GBP)
    • Wireless Networking Adapter ($99.99, 79.99 Euros, 59.99 GBP)
    • Wireless Controller ($49.99, 44.99 Euros, 32.99 GBP)
    • Play and Charge Kit ($19.99, 19.99 Euros, 14.99 GBP)
    • Rechargeable Battery Pack ($11.99, 14.99 Euros, 9.99 GBP)
    • Controller ($39.99, 34.99 Euros, 24.99 GBP)
    • Headset ($19.99, 19.99 Euros, 14.99 GBP)
    • Universal Media Remote ($29.99, 29.99 Euros, 19.99 GBP)
    • Component HD AV Cable ($39.99, 29.99 Euros, 19.99 GBP)
    • S-Video AV Cable (US) ($29.99)
    • SCART AV Cable (Europe) (24.99 Euros, 17.99 GBP)
    • VGA HD AV Cable ($39.99, 29.99 Euros, 19.99 GBP)

It's too early to get a reaction from gamers on Microsoft's pricing plan, but a few analysts privy to the information were able to chime in with their thoughts.

One anonymous analyst who spoke with GameSpot said, "I think tiered pricing makes sense, particularly as Microsoft wants to offer hardcore gamers more-advanced services. $299 is clearly a price leader and headline grabber, but I imagine they initially expect to ship (and sell) a majority of units at the higher price point. Also, with a $299 SKU, they avoid disappointing consumers, who are likely to compare launch pricing with the PS2 in 2000 and original Xbox in 2001."

The analyst adds, "As far as the publishers are concerned, Microsoft needs to make sure that publishers are making games that can be played with or without a hard drive, and I think they are communicating this message."

Michael Pachter, of Wedbush Morgan Securities, wasn't as cheerful. He sees the $299 model as a "publicity stunt." "They're doing it to say they are launching at $299. The hardcore guys will absolutely not buy the $299 model...only a complete idiot would buy the $299 model."

Pachter references Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi's statement saying the PlayStation 3 would "be expensive" as an attempt to "psych Microsoft into charging $399." But, he sees the $399 price point as providing Microsoft with breathing room to lower the price once the PS3 is released, which is projected to be in 2006, or even 2007.

Regarding the release date, Moore said there have been no announcements made primarily for competitive reasons, but also because Microsoft was still monitoring the production flow of the console's components and localization of launch titles. "One thing we won't do is underserve the market and leave retailers high and dry. That never works. That just leaves more people who are P.O.'d at us than happy with us."

There are also still no games that are definitely launch titles. But Moore does outline the strategy Microsoft is approaching. "So much is going to happen in the next couple of months. My view is simple: You need to make sure that you have the key genres covered at launch. Take care of sports, racing, action adventure, fantasy, first-person shooters. I think there are check marks that need to go in boxes to make sure that gamers have games they are looking for in a particular genre. We're still tracking 24 to 40 Xbox 360 games for release before the end of the calendar year. I think you'll see that all the titles we got excited about at E3 are still firmly in that launch window [90 days from the release of the Xbox 360]."

But what about gamers who aren't ready to jump into the next generation? Moore seems pleased with the current success of the original Xbox and doesn't see any price drop with the console. "We're selling all we can get [made]. Our biggest challenge is to meet demand in what is typically a very quiet time of year. So, no, I don't see any plans to change any pricing as we currently stand on the Xbox."

and here are some extra things about its processors and memory etc...

BTW , dont bother in buying the 299$ version, because you need to buy a memory card / hard drive to save / update content / play on xbx live; which ends up costing you 299 + 140$ more.

x-box live adds so much to games with content update and multiplayer. The hard drive costs $99 alone (MSRP). I would buy the $399 version if any.

This whole New Generation System stuff really drives me nuts. I am both a console gamer as well as PC. I own the xbox and such and as much as I love the games and such... $400 seems like such a poor deal to me. But one thing that I guess most people don't realize if that Microsoft actually is taking a loss on the first couple million units (this is coming from a friend of mine who works at microsoft... so don't jump all over me if it's wrong). The equipment that they are putting in combined with the cost of labor to produce them all costs somewhere around $450-$500. Of course, in the long run... they will make their money's worth I'm sure...

I guess I'm just torn about if I want to spend that much money on something that in a year or two I can get for probably far less. There is already speculation that once the PS3 comes out (which is currently priced lower than the xbox360) Microsoft will drop their prices a bit. They are also planning to release Halo 3 on the same day the PS3 comes out... honestly, that makes me laugh.

As it was said earlier in this thread... in the long run, it might be a little better in the long run to just get your kid a gaming PC. But then again, if Microsoft's new OS comes out as I've heard... gaming PCs might suddenly become standard just to run the new OS. But that's a different topic for a different thread...

I own the XboX console, as well as the PS2 and a decent gaming computer. (I'm a game lover)

I'll be purhusing the XboX 360 with harddrive and wireless controllers. Not only that, think of the modding potential the XboX has? My old Xbox runs windows Xp!

I'll also purchuse the PS3, couldnt live without it I'm sure.

Also, thats true what you said about high levels of hardware. Just look at the Windows Vista Os thats due out around the cyber bend... It needs "special" drivers just to run it. (although it will run on slightly older hardware) But thats without the Windows Vista Glass (aero) UI. (The one reason I'll buy it.)

Everything in the gaming world is getting bigger. Bigger harddrives, more mem, faster GPU's and CPU's, just the other day, two guys from finland overclocked a Radeon X1800's GPU to run @ 1.3 GHz!

    Now thats gaming =P

    EDIT:
The ONE MAJOR reason I'll be buying a 360 is because of Halo3! Its darker, heavier and alot more "grown uppish". lol

    I love the Halo series!

Ninja Gaiden anyone? There are others, but many are cross platform.

I am not into the ninja stuff. In my opinion, the coolest game on a console I have ever played, believe it or not, is either Ratchet and Clank, or TimeSplitters2. PsiOps is also a pretty cool game too.

D00M3 special edition for XboX is pretty sweet. Its even got the oldschool D00M95 hehehe (which you can play co-op with a friend.)

I have to say the truth, Halo is by far the best (IMHO)

But then Star Wars Republic Commando is sweet...

I dont understand why halo is so cool. You shoot a litle purple gun that's bullets are little things with tails. And you shoot at giant house flies.

  16. Scharfshutze

    Scharfshutze Private E-2

Its not only about the giant houseflies and the mutated iguanas man... :p

Its also about the atmosphere. The feeling you get when you play it.
Not only that, it has a pretty rock solid story line to it.

Now, I'm not saying there aren't alot og other good games out there.
I also am a fan of Playstation2. I think that KillZone rocks.

But seriously ealthemailman, have you played halo(2) throughout the whole
game? I used to be a BIG PS2 buff, I'd diss the XboX and its games up the rear, but when I really decided to try it out, it changed my mind.

  17. earlthemailman

I've played halo... and Killzone, and after play fps's on the cpu, i dont like them on consoles. The story in halo is pretty good, and i am sure the multiplayer is pretty cool, but single player is pretty stupid i think. I do like those Red vs Blue net videos. or blue vs red. whatever they're called. I own a ps2, and used to be a diehard sony fan, but i dont use it anymore, so yeah. Halo might be good if you realy get into it, but i have never gotten into it.

LoL 2000? I dont think so. I'll be getting an XboX 360 with harddrive, but I aint payen 2000 bucks for a POS "bundle".

Halo 1 and 2 are quite fun when you get into the story line. But its not for everyone I guess. I dont get much time playing since I have a three year old who wants to join all the time =P
