    Recently built new computer:
    nfore 630i/ GeForce 7100
    ATX 600watt PS
Intel Quad Core Kentsfield 2.4Ghz 0660 CPU
    Crucial 2G PC5400 667Mhz

Everthing seems to be installed correctly, but no power at all.

PS is ok, already swapped out.
Jumped power switch to test, nothing.
Removed all drives just in case, nothing.

    I'm down to mobo problem.

Does anyone have any other ideas before I return mobo?

Any help would be appreciated as I am frustriated with great new system that I can't use. I have second video card and several drives but won't even try them until system starts.

    Thanks

only thing that comes to mind is either the power switch or power switch is attached to the wrong post on the mother board. the old power supply may still be good. Check all recommended post jumpers from mobo installation instructions

I jumped PS switch pins with screwdriver, nothing.

    I'm back to mobo problem.

    Thanks for trying.

There might be, depending on model an additional PSU plug on the motherboard, which fits a four prong square plug. This provides additional power that the CPU requires. Without it, chances are it won't work.

I'm not being insulting, because it might be bumped off by accident, but check to make sure the black power switch on the rear of the PSU is in the on position. Make sure the 24 prong mobo plug is securely in the slot. Don't be afraid to push to make sure it's in tight. The plug is polarized and only fits in one way. Try it after that.

Thanks for input, I did make sure that 4 prong and 24 prong are in tight. Power switch on PS definitely on, check after each try.

    It's driving me nuts!!

    Hi PB,

I'm sure you have already tried it, but the best way to get a handle on it is to strip it down to the bare essentials, MB, 1 stick of Mem, Processor/fan, KB and see if it gets to the BIOS setup. Start adding components. If it's a defective unit you willl soon know which on it is.

    Good Luck, JIm

One last suggestion. I know it's simple, but double check the cmos jumper. Some manufacturers ship there MB's with that jumper in the clear cmos postion instead of the normal operation position.........

It would be interesting to know what you finally find as the problem :)

I'll let you know what happens.

I had same problem, and after a day or so of voltmeters and google searches for psu electrical unit problems, I checked my power strip and it had gotten turned off...I had forgotten it had a switch...I know this isn't your problem, but it damn sure brought back memories, and red face ;)...

Finally took MB out of case and connected PS and monitor with ony Ram on MB.

Screwdiver to PS pins and fan came on, went to CMOS!

Problem with short in case is my guess. Will get new case and see what happens.

what kind of risers does your case have?

I used cheap cardboard that came with MB.

I'm talking about the pieces that lift you mobo away from the case. Are they cylindrical shaped, but with ~6 sides?
The lifters that give me problems are the ones that are conical shaped. They tend to contact too much of the mobo.

No spacers came with hardware other than the small washer like rings taht I used to keep MB from contacting medal directly.

It was a very cheap case that was part of package, I'll make sure my new case has better spacers.

I think mine was a cooler master case. It has served me well. Lots of fans too.

It would seem my MB shorted against case, luckily no permanent damage.

I ordered a ANTEC 300 that should be much better.

    Thanks for your input.

If you hunt around you can find bulk packs of motherboard spacers, they're kind of golden and usually come with the Mobo. It's always good to have spares.

The motherboard spacers/risers (I call them stand-offs') in many cases are supposed to be metal and are used as grounds to the case for safety purposes. I have found though that not all motherboard makers supply good enough instructions with some of their boards. For instance, one board basic design (where the screw holes are) might be used for eight different boards, each with different chips and cicuitry on them and not all of the holes are meant to be used on all of the boards. This is where good documentation telling you to NOT to put a scew here or there comes in handy. I had an ABIT board like that and I was lucky to find a post that mentioned the screw to remove or I would have RMA the board. What I learned as a basic lesson, is that if the screw hole has a star like solder shape around it its meant to have a screw and its a ground. If there is no solder ring or star, don't put a screw or stand-off there.

Thanks for explanation, wish you wrote instruction book that came with motherboard.

I typically put a stand off anywhere I'll have to be pushing, though without those stars get plastic ones instead. Fortunately, most MOBO makers remember to put them under the card slots.

My MOBO didn't have them, finally found them at a cable supply house!

Almost ready to do job the right way, the funny thing is my old computer just blew power supply.

System finally working well, processor was bad. After swap out to Intel dual core, system works great. Sent back bad quad core.
