The computer at work is getting slower by the day. If I right click on opening a document it takes at least 2 to three minutes to open. I have determined it is related to being on the network because the problem goes away if I disconnect the cable from the network. Cannot find any malware, viruses, trojans. I have scanned with malwarbytes,a-squared, superantispyware, kaspersky, etc. I will try again to run Housecall as soon as I remove the old java programs as they are preventing Housecall from running the scan. A new network card was installed and no improvement.I had this problem before which Housecall found and corrected. So at this point I do not know if it is a virus or if for some reason the computer is looking for a network address that no longer exists and in that case how do I find it.

You have given very little information for a helper to work with here! I am just going to have to guess and get you to look for what I guess might be the most likely place to find a clue.

I want you to prepare to get the problem to occur, but before you "open a document", I want you to open Task Manager (right-click on the Taskbar > Task Manager and have the Processes tab showing/the cpu % showing at the bottom of the window). Open the document, and watch what happens to the cpu. If it rises to close to 100% and sits there, try to find which process is using all the resources (you can sort the cpu% column so that the program using the most resource is at the top, by clicking ... maybe twice? ... at the top where cpu is written). When you have found that info, click on the Networking tab (I am assuming XP ???) and see what activity is happening with the network.

Another thing to be try and be aware of is what else is happening on the computer at the same time as you are experiencing a "slowness" problem. For example, is your antivirus or some other program running a scan?

From the above observations, we might have an idea in which direction to look for the problem. I could well be wrong, but I am suspecting that the cpu is running at 100%, and that is why it is taking so long for the computer to open a document and is appearing "slow". Disconnecting from the network .... pulling the plug ... is a good clue, but at this stage, I do not know what it indicates. What sort of network are we talking about? Details please!

We have one server with 5 router points to various computers on different levels of the building. Beyond that not sure what you need to know about our server system. Saved a screen shot of my task manager but do not know how to attach the bitmap created in paint. At times there are two iexplore tasks running even though I have only one window open which makes me wonder if I don't have that bug that causes mulitple explorer tasks to run. When I try to open a word or jpeg the cpu doesn't go much above 5%. Anti virus programs not running a scan during problems. This happens right out out of the gate with no other processes running. There are multiple process of svhose.exe running. Could this be the problem?

In my previous reply I had asked about svhost.com. I mistyped it. The correct spelling is svchost.com which is not a virus.

    > "svchost.com" .... hopefully you mean svchost.exe .... ?
    > "At times there are two iexplore tasks running" ... that's OK.
    > "There are multiple process of svhose.exe running" ("svhose.exe" ?= svchost.exe) .... that's OK.

I don't just happen to know what the problem is! You are going to have to do some investigation to find out what changes occur when you "pull the plug" on the network connection. Watching what happens in Task Manager (all the tabs) is a good place to start ... maybe especially the networking tab?

***Task Manager/Processes tab .... make sure you have the little box at the bottom "Show processes from all users" ticked.
***Task Manager > View > Select columns > show "Mem Usage" .... and watch this also, looking for something clocking up big numbers.
    ----------------------
The type of/information that a helper might find handy to know:
do you have an it guy running the show/should you be troubleshooting/making changes to system?
    operating system .... service pack/latest updates ?
system .. old or new? little use or much?
    RAM how much
    hard drives .. size/free space
    cpu .. ?
network ... simply access to internet or is there sharing of info/services/administration between computers, and if so, what?
    network card ... make/model
computer network settings .... >> Run > type "cmd" > Enter > type "ipconfig /all" > Enter > right-click and "Select" > paste in post
routine maintenance ... clean and defrag?
    firewall ... no/yes, windows/other?
    antivirus ... no/yes full description
other security and/or monitoring programs ... resident scanners eg Defender/Spybot's TeaTimer/Adwatch?
list of programs installed ... >>> use CCleaner > Tools > Uninstall > Save to text file
list of running processes ... >>> use this link ... http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-generate-text-file-list-of-running-processes-in-windows/
any and all issues with the computer/operating system/programs in general ?
user accounts ... how many/what type/are you using an account with admin privileges ?
any other computers on network having same problem?

    Re: CCleaner ... a tip
    1. Download and install (if you don't already have it) 'CCleaner - Slim No Toolbar' http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
    2. Launch CCleaner and in its default settings (make NO changes) run its standard 'Run Cleaner' to rid your system of all junk files.
    3. Now run CCleaner's 'Registry > Scan For Issues > FIX all issues' as many times as is needed until '0' issues are found *BUT* say 'ok' each time to saving a 'back-up' and save those back-ups in their own folder in a convenient and memorable location. (These back-up entries may be needed if a problem results from this action. They may be deleted after you are absolutely sure that your system is running properly, and has suffered no ill-effects.)
    4. Restart your system.

Re: posting to a forum ..... a tip
Create and save a text file on your Desktop. Now, compile your next post in that text document with all the relevant information you can muster. Double-check it for accuracy & content. When you are satisfied that your document is complete and ready to be posted, then copy/paste into the forum post dialog box.

Re: Java Runtime Environment .... updating .... a tip
Uninstall all Java entries (Add/Remove Programs). Then go to the JRE website and download/install the latest version (now v6 upd 14).

Re: saving image with Paint .... a tip
When you "Save" or "Save as ... " in Paint, change the file type from bitmap to jpg.
But it is not necessary to post that since it appears to not be a cpu usage issue.
