I bought a NexStar TX enclosure from Amazon and received it today. So I connected my 2.5 hard drive to it. So apparently this enclosure uses a usb cable that uses a mini usb plug that connects to the enclosure and on the other end of the cable it has two standard A type plug. Apparently you have to plug in both for it to work. However when I connect both USB plugs, the computer shuts down, and if I keep it plugged in and turn my PC back on, during starting up it will shut down again.

Any idea on what's going on?

sounds like a faulty enclosure shorting the supply rails on the usb

    send it back, simples :)

That or one of the controller chips is sending dodgy information back to the PC, leading to it shutting down.

    Again, send the enclosure back.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll be sending it back to Amazon. By the way, besides it not working, the overall build of it was really cheap, I mean I guess you can't expect much for an 8$ product. But is there an enclosure like this for around the same price range or a little bit more you'd recommend? This one got great reviews and I'm sure I just got a faulty one but I didn't like the quality of it, like the mini usb port seems like it would break off from the inside any minute you unplug or plug the cable back in.

I'm currently using this one. It's extremely well made.

You don't need the double "A" male connectors to connect and/or use the external enclosure/drive unless you're connecting it to a PCMCIA to USB cardbus which requires an AC/DC adapter to run an external USB hard drive because of the 500 mA max current draw of the USB ports on that PCMCIA cardbus. It works fine, as is, with low current draw devices such as card readers or flash drives.

If you're plugging in to one of the USB ports on your computer, a single "A" male to "B" mini male cable will work just fine.

But since you state that the USB mini connection of the enclosure seems like it could break off at any time, by ALL means, send it back to Amazon!
