In a few years I will have to get rid of my laptop (Latitude E6400)because Anything after Win 7 does not support my keyboard drivers (lighted keyboard). But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. So what is the next logical successor to Win7? I am not interested in leasing my OS. So I will want an install CD or thumb drive (thumb drive preferred). This is a long term thing for me years, not months. I'm just planning ahead.

Like the current MS Office, I don't want to keep paying for the right to use my computer. When MS orphans Win7. I will take my time (if ever) to upgrade it. The only reason I left Win8 and XP behind was to get larger hard disks. Shoot I used my C128, until my stroke, Others said it had to go when they prepped my home for a wheelchair.

The next OS after windows 7 is windows 8 but that updates to Windows 8.1 or you could upgrade to windows 10.

There are free alternatives to MS Office. I use LibreOffice. MS Office is installed on my husband's two Win 7 computers because he uses it. I have LibreOffice (my two Win 7 computers) because occasionally I need to view a database.

If I send a "document" to someone, I usually send it as a pdf because it can be read on any sort of device. Not everyone has a PC.

for what purpose? Please explain what you need to do on a computer.

If you mainly surf, then a Chromebook would work for you.

No chrome please, I do printed circuit design as well as Sketchup to make 3D prints. In other words, simple CAD. I expect I will be using Win for a while. Oddly enough I need M/S Paint, as I don't know how to turn antialiasing off in Linux. I do circuit diagrams and occasionally Mechanical drawings in Paint.
