Hi all. I had just purchased a Nic card since I just upgraded to DSL. I installed it on an empty pci slot, and the wizard recognized it. Got the driver installed, and after it installed I kept getting,"Only 6 TCP/IP instances allowed." I went into the device manager and checked to see if it was a driver problem for the nic card, but it said that it was working properly. But I can't access using it. Any suggestions?

List the specs of your computer. Specifically operating system, NIC make and model, and motherboard. Also, have you upgraded to the latest driver version?

Re: Nic Card help resolved, but new problem developed!

Thanks for the effort you 2, but I was stupid and didn't read the FAQ board. I saw someone else who had a similar problem, and their solution worked for m ine too. BUT now I have a new problem!

I am running a Pentium 2 chop shop machine.
    350mg processor
    384mb of ram
    Win98 SE
Dual CD-ROM one reg and one a burning.
    Startech NIC Card
    DSL
    I was running 2 hard drives 1-Seagate 3Gig
    1-Seagate 4Gig

I recently decided to upgrade my hard drive so I got rid of the 2 Seagates, and got a 40Gig Seagate. Now after I got thru the disk wizard all seemed right with the world, but now my pc is not recognizing my Secondary IDE dual fifo. Tried reloading the driver, and switching the jumpers to cable select. It still wont work so my pc is not recognising my 2 CD-Roms.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Ok. When I go to the Primary and secondary IDE's it says they either are not present or the drivers are not loaded. It sats to try to update the drivers. That don't work. The cables I pulled out, and made sure they are inserted corectly. I will change the cd's back to master, and slave instead of cable select. Also when I installed the hard drive it would only work when I jumpered it as master and the drive capacity limit jumper. I never delt with the Bios so I probably would screw it up lol.

I have and ASUS P2B motherboard. Also now lost the Primary IDE dual fifo.

    BIOS Type - Award Modular
Award BIOS Type - Award Bios Modular v4.51PG
Award Bios Message - Asus P2B ACPI Bios Revision 1006
    System Bios Date - 10/09/98
    Video Bios Date 98/03/13

It says in suggestions that my Bios is 2 years old. Update if necessary.

I suspect the error message means exactly what it says. I know Win98 only supports a lmited number of network adapters (I thought it was 4 adapters, but I guess I'm wrong) and I suspect they have a limit on the number of TCP/IP bindings as well.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;193833

Did you previously have AOL installed? That install a stupid number of adapters. Right-click My Network Places and choose Properties. You'll se a box like the following:

    http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/kis/docs/howto/network/networkconfig/98-settings_gfx/network1.jpg

You'll also probably see six different lines that start "TCP/IP --> <Random Adapter Name>". You can't have more than six of those. You'll have to delete or remove some of the adapters that you're not using (the things with the green PCB icons) and remove some of the TCP/IP protocol bindings (the things that say "TCP/IP").

If you have a modem you're not using, disable that in Device Manager. If you used to have AOL, you might need to delete some of their virtual adapters that they install.

I tried the update, and it froze my pc lol. My primary and secondary ide's are still not responding. Any other guesses?

As I tried to load it it kept says comparison error. I ran that program you gave me to find my bios and it didn't change, and now I lost my usb hub LOL getting worse. By freezing I meant it would not boot up when I restarted it.

That's strange. When you extracted the ROM file from the zip archive you downloaded, it didn't give you an error did it? You did extract the file and then rename the extracted file, right? You didn't just rename the .zip file?

These contradict each other. If you were able to run Everest again (and Windows), then you were able to boot. What do the "it"s mean when you say "it would not boot up when I restarted it"? Is "it" the computer, the boot floppy, the awflash utility, or the EZ Flash BIOS Procedure?

It said P2B ACPI Revision 1006 then in Bios it said P2B.

When I had the path designated to copy the new Bios it said Warning this is not an ASUS Bios. Also it said the model didn't match.

I had the new Bios renamed p2b.rom.
Also when it froze during boot. I truned of the pc for 30 sec then restarted it. It worked then.

Getting a headache lol. Hope this info helps. OH. Also when I boot it goes thru it's detection, and it detects my cd-roms. Just when it boots to the desktop, and go into my device manager it says the bios ribbon I have them on doesn't exsist.
Also in the prefomance tab it give me two things.
Compatability-mode paging reduces overall system preformance.
Drive-C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

I think it's supposed to say you system is set for top prefomance?

    Any help?

Download and install you chipset drivers. That should help with the compatibility mode stuff, and possibly could help with the missing CD drive and USB hub.

You also need to run an up-to-date anti-virus scan.

On the right track. I got my usb hub back. Still having problems with the primary and secondary ide's. Gonna run an anti-virus scan now.

Problem solved. When I tried to flash my bios. I corupted my ide's. Got it fixed at local tech for 15.00, and treated myself to a graphics upgrade LOL. Thank you for your help. We almost had it fixed.
