I have been trying to get NICOTINE (the p2p application) to run on this Vista machine with no luck. I have the dependent files (pygtk 1.99.16, the latest version of Python, and the GTK+ bundle). Python is working as it should, but i cant get Nicotine to install. I had no problems at all getting it to work on my older XP machine, so i dont know if its a compatibility issue with Vista or what .

When doing my search for this topic here on MG, i noticed a few posts where people mentioned calling Microsoft for a rollback to XP . I would very much like to do that, Ive been jacking with Vista for about a year now and I quite simply dont like it - too many compatibility issues, too many small (admittedly benign) glitches and just general bloated-ness. Does microsoft allow this rollback? Has anyone actually DONE this ? I dont think i should have to pay for a retail package of XP when Ive already paid for this preload of Vista.

any and all comments/advice are welcome .

    1. You aren't going to get XP free despite the fact that you paid for Vista. MS doesn't operate that way.
    2. Before you consider installing XP, research your computer make and model to see if there are drivers for every piece of hardware. If there are not, then XP might install but the hardware won't work. You will be very unhappy with the end result.

It might be cheaper to just buy a refurbed XP computer and use it. That way you get the OS you want on hardware that works.

This is not surprising news, but it did answer my question about the rollback, thanks.

Anybody have any experience with Nicotine and Vista ?

The problem is that Nicotine wont even INSTALL .
therei s a setup.cfg and a setup.py file inthe downloaded nicotine folder, niether of which are stteing up the app. Again, i am running Vista, and i had no problem getting this application to install and run on XP.
Right clicking those install files and selecting PROPERTIES does not show a COMPATIBILITY tab .
The instructions including are for installing Nicotine on Linux, but it was possible to get it working on XP, i know because i did it .
Im just confused here trying to figure it out, searching forums and such and cant find any discussions anywhere on the internet pertaining to this issue .
