    Hi fellow Geeks!!
My NIS2007 Subscription will expire in a few days and I'm a little... or a lot, short on cash. Can I use the Updates on the MG's home page to keep me secure after it expires, or are those just an alternitive way to keep updated with a valid subscription??
Thanks for any info you can offer up. :cool

    Hi Remoc

Yes they do allow you to keep yourself upto date manually the virus definitions only as subcription side once run out will loose your ability to update the main core application and download the definition files automatically with intelligent updater.

However I would be thinking of maybe changing your security application to some of the free ones that do just as good, these will auto update virus definitions as well as the current core main appliation too, as the core application to a security product is crucial to be kept upto date too as exploits can be found to render them disabled in some circumstances.

If you do choose to want to change this guide is good for a read on whats available and we can IF you wish offer some suggestions, I will not suggest any at this moment ( just a thought on alternatives ) as you maybe happy with NIS for now and may subcribe again when funds are available to do so.

    Halo,
    Thanks so much for responding!!

Wow!! A ton of Info in the Link by Chaslang. Excellent
    .
I absolutly would be open to your suggestions on a Good AV and also Firewall as NIS has both as you well know.

I have used Norton for several years and have been quite happy with the application, as I have been completly infection free, but I'm very open to your suggestions as I am in a ugly situation right now.

    On my system now

    XP SP3 IE7
    Ad-Aware 2007
    Spybot S&D
    SpywareBlaster
    CCleaner

Thank you for your Time and Advice

    Hi Remoc

Depends on if as you say you've been malware free with using NIS so that for you is a great solution and I would always say go with what works for you.

But alternatives are and my suggestions as my favs:

    Avast for Antivirus
    PCTools Firewall Plus
    BOClean inconjunction with Windows Defender
    Spywareblaster as a preventitive application

All are listed in that link to Charlies guide, for download.

But if your in a position to in some point in near future to re-subscribe to Norton then as its worked for you, its a viable option and just keep updating the virus definitions manually for now, they dont IIRC generally update the main application too many times in a year, but you would have to check for and download the manual virus defs each day or other day to keep current.

I woudl imagine you safe surf so are at bottom end of risk scale, but in computing everything that can happen happens! so if going to manually update NIS for a while have a reminder to check daily once you turn on PC, be it sticky note or Outlook reminder.

Yes Chas has a great guide and is a guru in these matters,

    Hi Remoc

Most welcome, and if you do decide to remove Norton NIS, then use Add/Remove to remove all components and then run this Symantec tool to remove any left overs before installing the new, delete any folders in Program Files relating to Norton or Symantec and run say CCLeaner its cleaner and registry tools to mop up any left overs also, do run the registry one at least 3 times as it will fine orphan entries from the first ones deleted.

BUT I do still think its worth manually updating NIS for now as I feel your happy with that application and its worked well for you, so with that and your safe surfing its a good combination, if you feel like a change you know you have alternatives and help in using them.
