I finally upgraded from Win7 to Win10 only to find that I have no audio to my speakers or to my headphones. The computer wants to use PlayOn something-or-the-other virtual sound but that doesn't work. When I try to make it use the onboard NVIDIA sound that doesn't work either. Any help?

What is the brand and model number of your motherboard (or computer, if you don't know what motherboard it uses)?

It's a Compaq Presario Model #GC662AA ABA SR5113WM (yes I bought it at Wal Mart), 64 bit X2 dual core 3600. "Base Board" is an M2N68-LA (ASUTEK) IVY 1.01.

I forgot something that might be important... in order to upgrade Windows 10 I had to put a Windows 10 compatible graphics card in the computer--the built in card would not work and Win10 detected that and wouldn't load. The new graphics card has an HDMI port and the driver that's trying to run is PlayOn virtual audio. There are two NVIDIA drivers that are disabled and both of them say their port in on the HDMI plug...

Your default sound device has probably changed. Have you been to sound and set "Speakers" to enabled and as the default device? Can be found in the old control panel.

I have attached an image. A shortcut to 'Sound':- Start > Run > explorer shell:::{F2DDFC82-8F12-4CDD-B7DC-D4FE1425AA4D} > OK.

According to the support pages, all revisions of the M2N68-LA motherboard use the Realtek ALC888S for audio. Windows 10 has built-in driver support for this chip.
    1. Launch "Device Manager".
    2. Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section.
    3. Look for an entry called "Realtek" something-or-other.
    4. Double-click on that entry and see if the device status is "This device is working properly."
If the driver is working properly, then follow K4onashi's instructions and make sure the speakers are enabled and set as the default output device.

K4onashi: Speakers are the default device.
Mister Krinkle: Once you mentioned Realtek I remembered that this indeed was the audio driver/device that I needed. And it was easy to find the "Action" in the device manager and go to the load Realtek function in legacy devices.
    However...
It crashed the system with with a blue screen and "Your PC has encountered a problem and must restart." Did it twice. So no luck there either.
Is there a hardware solution perhaps?

    FYI the crash also said
Stop Code: System thread extension not handled
    What failed: RTKVHDA.sys

You know what? This is following the general rule of 'Windows 10 upgrades will screw your PC'. 70% of the time, Windows 10 upgrades cause nothing but issues (in my experience). This is why I don't use it, apart from on a sandbox development rig (no internet).

RTKVHDA.SYS is the Realtek driver. I will stop giving advice here, sorry. At this point I'd backup all of your documents and wipe the machine to achieve a fresh OOBE.

baklogic: I did that already, didn't work. Same errors. So I tried this:
I hooked up a 21" TV to the graphics card via an HDMI cable, and got sound and video. Hooked my computer speakers up to the TV headphone jack and the sound is good. So the PlayOn virtual sound device routes the sound through the HDMI and not through the mini-jack ports.
I might get a better TV to do this with, as you have to be looking straight at the screen or the video looks weird, but small TVs are pretty cheap (if you can find them).

Great- good to see the way you tried- will help someone else with a similar problem
