--Try and manually install the audio driver for your board - here is the manufacturers site for your motherboard (make sure you determine the ver number of your board) and download the audio driver file.

    http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=1335

--Check in services (Go to Run - type in services.msc and hit return). Check for a service named "Windows Audio". Make sure it is present, set to Automatic, and is started.

--When you look at the audio device in device manager, what do you see?

If none of the above helps, post back and let us know - or if the Windows Audio service is not present I can tell you how to restore it. Also, please post back if you resolve your problem - it can be a big help for others.

windows audio, is present, started and set to auto. i'm not sure what i'm doing with downloading from that website as i don't know what version of mb i have.

when i go into device manager under "other devices "it has

    multimedia audio controller
    sm bus controller
    video controller 9vga compatitable)

(all these have a yellow question mark at them) when i click on them it says they are not configured porperly and asks to reinstall driver, i don't have a disk for them

under "sound, video and game controllers" i have

    audio codecs
    legacy audio drivers
    legacy video capture devices
    media control devices
    unimodem half-duplex audio device
    video codecs

when i click on these it says tehy are working properly

Sorry, Colin - I was called away from the computer.

Your motherboards version number is somewhere on the board. Will usually look like V1.0B or Version 1.0 or Rev 1.0, 2.0 etc . . . something like that. Let me check on the site I gave you and see if the version numbers matter for the audio driver.

According to your Everest report, your board seems to have has the SiS 7012 Audio Device. Lets try the driver for it first.

It appears from the motherboard site that the revision number should not make a difference for this driver. Go to this page:

    http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=1741

In the boxes that are displayed, locate the one with the Audio Drivers (just under the first box labeled ATA). Locate the second driver down from the top of the box - you need the SIS 7012. Under where it says "Download From" pick the country that best describes where you are. It will start a download - SAVE this to your desktop, or at least a folder where you can find it again.

This driver is in the form of an application .exe file. I scanned it with Avast antivirus, and it was clear (even from manufacturers sites, you never know) and you should scan it as well.

After the scan, shut down your Anti virus program and any other programs you might have running in the background.

Double-click the .exe file you saved to your desktop, and follow any directions that appear. I cannot guide you through this part of it, but it should be pretty straightforward.

If this doesn't resolve the problem, let us know. We will try it a different way (keep the file you saved to the desktop - you may need it again).

Sorry if there are typos - I'm in a bit of a rush. Keep us posted.

i downloaded that, it has extracted a folder with various files/folders in it. there is a set up icon, i've tried that but to no avail, when i click on properties on the setup icon and click on the compatability option it only gives compatability mode optiosn for windows nt, windows 2000 windows 98 and windows 95. on the firts 2 i get error message after 10% and the second 2 after 95% saying "cannot find setupx.dll"

Seems computers are having problems all over this morning . . .

I'll have to leave till later this evening. If the Sis 7012 driver fails to work, then you need to download and save like before the Realtek AC97 Driver. But before doing that . . .

I noticed near the bottom of the driver page an * comment to the effect you can have their utility called DriverAgent scan your system for driver updates . . . how well this works, or if it works when an existing driver is not present, I can't say . . . but it's worth a shot.

Ok - if the Sis 7012 driver failed, and the DriverAgent didn't work . . . go ahead and download the Realtek AC97 Driver. I don't know how fast your connection is, but it is a bigger file (a little over 20mbs) so it will take longer then the last file.

Go into Control Panel, then Add/Remove programs. Look for any audio driver that are listed (like the Sis 7012), and remove them (you may not see any).

Do as before . . . click on it and follow the instructions. If this doesn't work, there is only one driver left, and it doesn't say it supports XP. But you can try it also - just do as above like you did with the other driver files.

Let us know. I promise to check back when I can and see how its going.

    READ ME FIRST

Try this then - go to device manager and to the devices with the yellow question mark. Right click on the device, and select "update drivers". In the box that pops up, select "Install from a specific location", and hit next. Select the "Browse" button, and point it to the folder where your driver download created the folders.

Sorry - I thought it was going to be a wizard type .exe

Dunno why it's saying it doesn't support XP - the Gigabyte site says it does . . . Hmmmmm

I opened the .exe files on my desktop. The Sis 7012 folder does have an XP related folder in it - make sure you point the update (browse) to that folder . . . and hit next.

If that fails, try the Realtek driver. When the .exe file creates the Realtek folder on on your desktop, open it and double click the setup.exe file. If the same thing happens as before - point the update (browse) to the Realtek folder like you did the other.

Make sure you reboot after every attempt.

Sorry if any of this has confused you - I'm usually more concise, but I'm pressed for time. Let us know how it goes - I'm sure there are brighter bulbs then me here that can sort it out. I'll check back later.
