I to have this exact same problem going on with my pc. When i go to sound and audio devices it tells me "no audio device". When i click on volume control through the start menu, i recieve a message stating "No active mixer devices available". This to started after I had to reinstall xp to my comp. I am still currently trying to solve this problem.

    Hi

If your PC is one from the likes of DELL, HP, Sony, etc what is the Make and model varient as this will assist us if we need drivers?

If your PC is a home or custom build what is the motherboard make and version?

Okay, I do admit that i am a novice when it comes to computers, so i dont know if i may have installed windows xp into a drive that could not support it. I have tried several methods of trying to fix the volume one example is by hopperdave2000 from a similar thread:

"Go thru your startup menu and uncheck anything in there that isn't sound related; click Start > Run and type msconfig and press Enter. Click the StartUp tab and scroll thru it, disabling just about everything. You can re-enable stuff later if you need it. Click Apply, Click OK, Click Restart Now. After completely loading back to Windows, use the PC as usual and see if anything heppens to the sound. If it stays working, then you know something in that list is turning off the audio."

Also i read that when installing xp, some hardware's drivers are not installed. They must be installed manually after installing xp. Thus realizing this may be the problem to my volume difficulties, i tried to install the drivers for Multimedia Audio Controller and Ethernet Controller. I was not able to because the Hardware Update Wizard could not find the necessary software to do so.

So my question is this maybe the problem that is causing my audio device not to work? I believe it is but, i am not quite sure and if it isn't then im sure its a problem that needs to be addressed as well.

Well anyway here is my report, hope it helps:
