My computer is a HP Pavilion Slimline s5123w PC

    My operating system:

    Windows XP

The error message I get in the control panel is this:

    "No Audio Device"

(DirectX Diagnostic Tool) DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x88780078 (No driver)

I believe the issue occured after I uninstalled or disabled Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver in the Device Manager. I tried Windows Update and it gave me a "failed" error message for the Realtek update. Also whenever I try to launch sndvol I get a "no mixer devices" error message. I've attached an everest log. Any help would be much appreciated.

Greetings, cherbette, and welcome to MajorGeeks...

You might have to fool SP3 into thinking it's SP2 so you can reinstall the UAA patch. To do so:

Click Start > Run, type in regedit, then click OK.

In Registry Editor expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, Current Control Set, Control, Windows.

In the right panel you will see CSDVersion.

Right click it, choose Modify. In the highlighted input window, you should see 300. Change it to 200.

Click OK, close the Registry Editor and restart your PC.

Windows will now think it is SP2 and allow you to install the Microsoft UAA Driver from here and then your Sound Driver.

Make sure you have tested your audio before changing the CSDVersion back from 200 (SP2) to 300 (SP3).

Thank you for the warm welcome. I did exactly what you said and still "no audio device" under sounds in the control panel :cry Interestingly, when I click on the hardware tab and scroll to "realtek high definition audio" it says "this device is working properly" however, when I click properties>properties and click under "audio devices", "midi devices and instruments", "mixer devices" etc and click "properties" it says "driver is enabled but has not been started". I googled this message and read this had something to do with the "plug and play software enumerator" not running (it is not on my services..."plug and play" is but not "plug and play software enumerator"). I don't know if there is any validity to that. You can't always believe what you google. Thanks again for any further assistance. I hope I can fix this problem

    Good morning...

When I do a search at this HP driver site for the 'Pavilion Slimline s5123w' I get only Windows Vista and Windows 7 results - do you have a Wndows XP driver package available? If so, you might try uninstalling your present audio drivers and then running Driver Sweeper (make sure that you opt out of any search engine/toolbar offers). Then reinstall your driver package and see if your symptoms change.
