no audio device listed in sounds and audio devicse

running a dell demension 2350. i have sound when i play a cd or when i use windows media player. i cannot get any sound when i am on the internet. i went to control panel to sounds and audio devices and found no audio device installed . went to device manager and to speakers (subsection of controllers) found no audio device. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Yes, the same machine. with help i got the sound to work in the media player and the CD ROM. i did some research and found that because i did a reinstall to get the computer running again i did not follow outlined instructions at the dell website. install windows, chipset,and others drivers. i understand that i might be able to install the chipset driver and that might solve the problem. i went to dell website to install driver but, i cannot complete the install it keeps giving me the message can not complete the install.went to details and it tells me that the runtime was not able to start. someone suggested that the subsystem might be screwed up...i can not download any of the drivers from the dell website. the chipset installed is a intel (R)845G 4, and what i think i need is Intel 4.04.1007,A11. any suggestions to install from other site?
