I've been on this problem for weeks now, on and off, and I am getting tired of it.
There is no way I can get sound from my computer anymore.

I have 3 sound devices in my computer: (1) C-Media AC97 onboard (2) Soundblaster Player 1024 (3) USB Sound Headphone Logitech.

Despite this wealth of devices, I cannot get a sound out of my machine.
There is no error or conflict in Windows device manager, but in the 'sound and audio devices' panel from Windows control panel it says 'No Audio Device'.
I have installed all the latest drivers, tried the realtek drivers, tried a great many different configurations, reinstalled Windows, installed the SP1, removed/uninstalled the Soundblaster and/or USB headphone, disabled the onboard AC97, checked the BIOS configuration, reset the CMOS, etc...
The only sound I can get out of my machine is the voice warning (POST when I boot without keyboard...
It seems to me the problem was initiated when I started using the USB headset, and at the time there was also a slight USB misfit, that was solved by the SP1.

Any of you has an idea?

No one has any clue on that one?

I am trying to install the SP2 to see if it might help, next step after that is buying a new hard disk and reinstall from scratch...

Hard Drive won't be the problem. It could be that you have three going. If you are going to format use only one & see if that gets sound back.

Yea, well, since I tried to reinstall windows and it didn't work, I guess I'll have to try with a fresh install.

I have tried what you suggest, but it didn't help. I am not entirely sure if the USB was totally uninstalled, since there no install software to speak of, and Windows did its own little work to detect and install the drivers. I tried to uninstall the drivers, delete all files and remove all traces from the registry, but still no joy...

Thats all nice and all but? What are you running?
to start out with what modem are you running that will have effect on your audio, if you didnt know that. You obviously need to check your modem drivers and make sure they are right, that is where your problem lies. Well part of it is anyway besides what else you're doing there. Start out with the problem at hand, Don't add to it by adding more parts to the mix. Until you have one problem solved. Check your modem drivers. Depends on the modem? You never did say what your system was at all, You could have a Emulation problem with the modem. Look in your device managment options. Of are you even running your system with a modem in it. If not then, start with your network card drivers. The audio and both of them work together, again depending on what they are?

    Motherboard?
    OP?
    a list would help.

I do not use a modem, and have none installed.

The OS is Windows XP Pro, the problem first appeared with no service pack installed, I then installed SP1 and now SP2, but it didn't help.

The motherboard is an ASUS P4S8X, the soundcard is SB Player 1024.

I have now reinstalled Windows on a new HD, and the sound works, both with the USB headset and the SB.

Just saw your thread in searching for the same problem. I am having the EXACT same problem on my system. Everything was working fine. I got a blue screen, computer wouldn't boot. Had to do a chkdsk and repair some files, then started getting the same problem. repaired XP, did all the patches and service packs, reloaded device drivers, still did not work. Went and purchased a new sound card, still didn't fix the problem. Seems the sound card drivers are working find but something in XP is not loading. I have spent about 20 hours on this and am no further.
