I know this is most likely a result of something else, but I have put up with this for some time now and I would really like sound back on my computer. In the control panel when I go to sound devices it informs me that there is no device and all adjustment functions are grayed out. I have no speaker icon on my taskbar as well. I have read some other posts and none seem to relate to my particular set up. I have also read that most people who help ask for a log run in something called "Everest" so I have done that and attached it as well. Thank you in advance for your help in fixing this.
    Thanks
    Jerry

Ok I cant attach the file because the limit is 250 and my file is 281. Now what do I do?

Ok. I cut the file in two and hopefully it will fit now.

    Hi Jerry

Could you give us some background info also, as in have you had malware (Virus or trojan) on your PC that was cleaned up reciently? have you had to re-install Windows?

But in the main the fix is to install the Chipset driver then reboot and install the Audio driver, both are found below

    Chipset

Thank you for the reply Halo. I will try what you recommend. I have not had to re-install Windows. As far as any Malware goes, I really don't know. I run the latest version of AVG, I recently ran SUPER Anti Spyware off of this site as I thought that maybe something was off there. I will look for a Malware removal tool here on Major Geeks as well. I will post my results when I have them.
    Thanks

I just ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and nothing was found. I will now proceed with the recommendations given by Halo.

Hello again. I still have no audio device. Everything is still grayed out. I went to my device manager and I see a yellow exclamation point next to the phrase "Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter" I will run "Everest" again, split the logs, post them and hope someone chimes in with another suggestion, or tells me that I did something wrong in following Halo's instructions. As always, thanks in advance.

I am also noticing that I have a Microsoft update that can't install. It is update KB956803.
Thanks as always. Just trying to provide as much information as possible as to what is happening on this system.

    Hi Jerry

Do you have ZoneAlarm installed as your Firewall? if you do you will need to make sure its the lastest version as ZoneAlarm has an issue with that KB in which you could loose internet access until updated or removed

But if Windows Update fails an update grab the manual download HERE and install

Back to the Audio issue.... what you could try is this info here in this post and I have edited the links below to be your drivers, do make sure you are logged in as the Admin.
In this one we are going to trick Windows into thinking only SP2 is installed to try and re-install the High Def Audio Driver in the UAA one, this comes with SP3 but maybe yours is not installed correctly.

    Basic steps to the above

    Hi Halo
First off, thank you again, if for nothing else then your concise easy to follow instructions and your perseverance. I do not have "Zone Alarm" for a firewall. I grabbed the update, that went well. Followed the instructions to trick my box into thinking it was SP2, that went well. Installed kb88111xpsp2.exe, that seemed to go well. Installed ALC850 from the setup.exe file inside the zip, that seemed to go well. I still have no audio device and I still have a yellow exclamation point next to "Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter". I am game for something else if you care to continue. I can't thank you enough to this point. I am going back to SP3 for now.
    Thanks

Maybe this sounds stupid, but no harm in throwing it out there. If we can trick the machine into another version, is there any point in sending it back to SP1 and trying to fix it with my original disc? I have tried to use the disc to repair it, but it tells me that the version I am running is newer, so it stops me.
    Thanks

    Hi Jerry

Did you do the restart steps when in the instructions after changing and then installing the drivers? just doouble checking.

No sadly going back to an earlier version wont work as the UAA driver would only install in SP2 and if we couldnt trick it just one version back its highly unlikely going to SP1 will help as the steps would be the same and with same outcome.

I may have another route to try but depends on your next answer, as in what is the full error message when you go into Device Manager and double click to open say Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter and look in the Device Status box?

Also double check in your BIOS that the onboard audio is enabled, and in Services (its it control panel > admin tools) that the Windows Audio service is started and its startup type is automatic.

    Hi Halo
Yes, I restarted after every step, most of the drivers prompted you for a restart anyways.

    It says;
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

On board audio is enabled in the BIOS.

Windows audio service is started and is set to automatic.

Early on in the process some otheres have suggested stopping it, changing the start option, restarting, then changing everything back and restarting again.

I look forward to your next attempt, and as always.....THANK YOU.
    Later

    Hi Jerry

Good seems as if you haev multiple devices loaded for audio and Windows doesnt know which one to load, so open Device Manager and Sounds, Video and game controllers and right click and uninstall all the devices listed, their and once done reboot and then immediatly reboot again.

Then check Windows update for any updates, install them

Then re-install your Audio driver again.
