I've had this problem many times and usually I download the right drivers to fix it. This time I've had no sound for a month since none of the drivers I download seems to work.

I currently have everything sound-related uninstalled in hopes that you guys will lead me to correct drivers. I uninstalled the audio bus on high definition thingy and the audio driver which was always conexant.

My laptop is Compaq Presario C700 series. The service tag says 706NR. My operating system is Microsoft Windows Xp Prof. Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

I have used the HP website, located my model, tried to download the updated driver, and it installs. I see the name and version but it still says no audio device. Also when I sometimes download drivers it says cannot find MEDIA device or something like that.

    Pls Help :puke

    Greetings, darkmasterz8.

You'll most likely have to install your chipset drivers, then the audio software.

I'm having a little trouble finding a link, so try this:

Please download and install Everest, a free system information tool.

Run Everest and click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next
Choose System Summary Only > Next
Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report
Click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop, use Browse to locate desktop)

Then attach your log to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

Man, it's hard finding Compaq drivers - at least for me it is. :(

You might try reloading the UAA patch located here or here, then reinstalling the Conexant driver. I understand that XP SP3 has the patch, but it won't hurt to help it along.
Your report shows an Intel 965 Express chipset - that's the driver that I can't find for your Presario. Pretty generic, but I don't know if Compaq/HP added anything. See if you can find a download (I've read that the C700 and the HP dv6000 are similar - maybe that'll help).
If you do find a chipset d/l (or if one of the gurus here can find one for you), then you might try uninstalling everything, then installing the chipset, UAA, and audio drivers, in that order.

Your report also shows a 'SMART Hard Disks Status = FAIL' - better keep an eye on that.

    Hello,
Was this a downgrade from VISTA? If so, it looks like the Conexant driver needs to be modded in order for it to work.

    Downgrading HP Notebooks.

The link for the modded audio driver gave a invalid link. Here are the links.

    MS UAA_XP-SP3.zip

    Conexant SmartAudio_221_XP.zip

Just to be on the safe side I would check these out on Virustotal.com

When I run setups for those patches, it tells me my service pack is newer then the update it is applying and that there is no need.

I never changed the operating system, it came like XP the first day. The bottom two links don't download for me. Says unable to connect; "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at public.bay.livefilestore.com."

Conexant SmartAudio_221_XP.zip is over the limit for attaching a file. If you PM me with an email address I can email you the file.

Hm.. Can you give me instructions on changing the file extension to .exe. Can't seem to find a way to rename it.

Save the file from the email to your desktop and then right click it and select rename from the list. Then just put an e on the end instead of the one. If you have problems, I can try to resend it as a zip with a password.

Well I saved it as firefox(default) and it goes to my download folder. When I try to rename, it doesn't show .ex1 at all.

Well I did those instructions and it didn't work. It says cannot start this hardware. There was problem installing this hardware; this device is not configured correctly.

    Hello,
    Please see also this link.

    downgrading compaq presario C700 laptop

Notice the HD audio driver in post last post. sp36090.exe

I should have thought of this before but when you do a windows update and look into optional updates, is there an option to install an audio driver?

Yes I downloaded that first. However, is it suppose to have the yellow exclamation point next to it? And was I also suppose to click setup that was in the audio driver folder? Cause when I tried, it said could not find the MEDIA or something like that.

I am not sure why it it doing that as that is the driver recommended for the C700. Did you see my post on downgrading compaq presario C700 laptop? Also, when you run windows update, do you see an option to install an audio driver in optional updates? And if not does the sp36090.exe mentioned in the downgrading compaq presario C700 laptop link work?

Yes I downloaded that UAA driver first. Restarted and saw in devmgmt that it had a yellow exclamation. Right click to update, opened sp36090, clicked the inf file, and it said the same thing as before. "Cannot start hardware"'

My windows updates only show security updates.

Did you ever reinstall the chipset drivers? It's been my experience that, quite often, if the north- and southbridge software is corrupted, then issues present as audio problems.

The driver reload sequence would be: 1. Chipset; 2. UAA; 3. Audio.
