No Audio Device

I searched through the "no sound" threads and did not find this problem.

A couple of days ago the icon for sound controls disappeared from the tray on the bottom right of the screen (XP SP3). After looking for what might have caused it I wanted to listen to a YouTube video but had no sound. I generally run with the sound mute and it seems to be stuck on that.

I just looked in the Sounds and Audio Devices under the Control Panel and it says "No Audio Device". Is this an indication my audio card or chip or whatever on the computer has died?

    Thank you
    Mike

The first thing to try is going into CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM, clicking on the HARDWARE tab and opening DEVICE MANAGER.

Do you see a red "X" or yellow "?" by any of the devices listed? If so, click on it and choose "update driver".

If this fails, go to the drivers and downloads section of the PC or motherboard mfr's website, download the latest driver and reinstall it.

If all else fails, the lowest price alternative is to install a USB sound card. Here's a link to NewEgg of some models available:

    Hope this helps. :)
