Ok I need for you to download and install, but do not run yet, Driversweeper....

    http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

in device manager > sound/video and games controller> delete any reference to sound drivers i.e.. Realtek. Go to add/remove programs and delete the realtek driver software (if any!!).

Restart your machine in safemode (f8 at boot). YOU MUST ONLY COMPLETE THE NEXT STEPS IN SAFE MODE.

Run Driversweeper by double clicking the icon on your desktop. In the left hand of the main screen you are presented with a set of options, you need to select the realtek sound put at tick in the box, when selected click Analyze then click Clean (please run the clean button twice to clear up any residual left overs). Restart your machine and click out of any "found new hardware" prompts. Follow these next steps in the EXACT order that is shown or the fix may not work ......

1.) chipset..... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...s&dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=404643&sw_lang= ..... follow the prompts to install and restart your machine ignore new hardware prompts.

2.) uaa.... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-47284-1 ... follow the prompts to install and restart your machine ignore new hardware prompts.

3.) audio... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...s&dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=404643&sw_lang= ... follow the prompts to install and restart your machine ignore new hardware prompts.

    4.) audio update.... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...s&dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=404643&sw_lang=

Hopefully you should now have sound !!;)!! If you do have sound now I would strongly advise for you to update your OS to SP3.

@ Dan Penny... I had already pointed him to the uaa driver, though I notice that the one that you have pointed him to is a different version....(sp32646)..
and tthe one that I linked is.... (sp33867).. is there any differance to these?? the only thing that I could find is that mine is UK version and yours is US, would there be any conflicts?? I ask this as I help quite a few people here from the US with driver issues and don't want to give them the run around by advising them to install the wrong version of UAA.

    Thanks. Iain.

My link provides UAA, which is why I provided that link. Doesn't matter where the OP is from. I couldn't find where the OP is (or I missed it). I also missed your UAA, so it really shouldn't matter which the OP uses.

    Hi,
In your device manager I notice that you do not have any warnings beside any of the trees there, especially in the sound/video and games controllers tree, which indicates that there is not an issue with the audio driver. I need for you to check that the windows audio service is started and set to auto start.... go to Start> Control Panel> Admin' Tools> Services scroll down to windows audio and windows multimedia class scheduler and check if the settings and dependicies are the same as mine.......

    http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/6517/audioserv1.jpg

if not then set them the same as mine.
One other thing ... when was the last time that you did a thorough malware/virus clean up ?? as the majority of time it is usually malware/virus infection that causes this type of issue, I would strongly advise that you go through the removal steps for you OS here... http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 ..try to complete all the scans and create a new thread here... http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35 ... and post logs in the order requested like this.... http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880

I am sorry that you find this confusing :(, but it is not wise to let some one who you don't know to gain access to your machine through teamviewer, but, if you wish to allow me access then you will need to send me your ID for teamviewer so that i can take controll and see if I can resolve it this way.

Hey I am still here, I haven't been able to make contact due to the differing time zones ;).

I need for you to carefully read everything that I wrote in post# 12. If you follow the instructions and compare the images and everything thing looks the same, then it will be something else that is the cause, but, if the images do not look same and do not have the same settings, we can change that very easly, all you need to do is read what I write and follow all of the instructions that I give, they are very simple instructions to follow so you should not experience any issues following them ;). Everything we do is totally reversable IF something does go wrong, so don't be worrying about messing your machine up ;).

I would try to restore the machine back to when the audio was working if you can......

To use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state, follow these steps:

1.)Log on to Windows as an administrator.

2.)Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
    http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/1086/step1sb.png
3.)On the Welcome to System Restore page, click to select the Restore my computer to an earlier time option, and then click Next.
    http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/9954/step2bs.png
4.)On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.
Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
    http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/8104/step3x.png
5.)On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
6.)Log on to the computer as an Administrator. Then click OK on the System Restore Restoration Complete page.
    http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/2389/step4f.png

If you successfully restored your computer to a previous state, and the computer performs as expected, you are finished.

Try re installing the driver that is in this folder here.... C:\HP\Drivers\Audio ....
to get to this go to Start> Computer> Double click on C:\ drive> unhide the contents of that drive if prompted to> scroll to find the "HP\Drivers\Audio" folder> open the folder and locate the audio set-up.exe file and double click it to run> follow the prompts to install and re-start your machine.
