No audio, just beeps

Hi people, I've searched forums and other sites for posts/suggestions that could've helped me, but so far nothing helped. So here I am...

    I have 2 problems;

(note: I had a trojan, but I managed to kick it off and now the os doesn't seem to do awckward things anymore)

    - My PC is starting up slower. The loading of the OS' interface takes 40+ seconds. This only happened after I used Uniblue's Registrybooster 2009, to fix registry keys (this always worked in the past, but not now apparently).

    - Another problem is that my sound (all sounds, including startup and shutdown) are gone (Also after using Registrybooster 2009). The symptoms are as follows...

...For every sound (prompts and the like) that are supposed to play, I get a small fast beep which seems to come from the computer tower instead of my speakers/headphones.

... Windows Media Player tells me I have a problem with my sound device, or that it's not installed. Winamp gives me an error when I try to play an mp3; "bad direct sound driver".

... The sound icon in my taskbar is gone.

... When I go into control panel to open up volume control, I can't; "There are no active mixer devices available"

... I checked my sound device in Device Manager, but it doesn't show an error. (I have sigmatel high definition audio codec)

... The audio device is enabled, signed and running properly.

... When I run "services.msc" (Services (local)) and look at Windows Audio from the list, I see it has already been Started. Start-up type is Automatic. So that seems to be fine.

... When I got to Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, under Volume tab, the Device Volume slider is greyed out, so I can't change it, or any other options there for that matter. Under its Audio tab, Default Device pulldown list is also disabled and greyed out. Also all others under that tab are greyed out. Under the Voice tab, it's the same story. Under Hardware tab, the Sigmatel device and other regular devices are listed, but I can't do anything other than view its properties or troubleshoot. Also here it says my device is running properly.

I've already tried going back to previous registry restore points, but the sound still is not back. Seems to me also the lag-time on os startup is simply because of the bad registry key for sound.

Please, can anyone possibly help me? I am dying here. :( Your help is much appreciated.

Some info on my system setup:

Windows XP, Media center edition (version 2002)
    Service pack 3
Sound device is "SigmaTel High Definition audio CODEC"

I don't know about the slow bootup, but I can guess the audio problems are due to messed up drivers. The sounds from the tower -- there's actually a little speaker on the motherboard, all it does is play beeps. Such as when you first startup, it goes through the POST and gives you beepcodes if something's out of whack.

So I'd recommend trying re-downloading and re-installing the drivers.

The fact that you got one trojan out of you system does not necessarily mean that it's over. There could be more malware. I suggest that you run these - full scans:

    MBAM: http://majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html
    SAS: http://majorgeeks.com/SUPERAntiSpyware_d5116.html[/QUOTE]

Check you codec pack for updates. Do you run k-lite? An update came not so long ago.

    Also try these:

    chkdsk: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265/en-us
    scannow: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747/en-us

Finally a malware check here on Majorgeeks wouldn't be a bad idea: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Thanks for your quick replies folks. I appreciate your suggestions. I've tried re-installing my driver, but no results. I've already got K-lite codec pack, and I tried fixing broken codecs, but that wasn't an option because apparently every codec was already good to go.

I've already got SUPERantispyware installed on my machine. I already scanned with latest definition updates, but it doesn't detect anything suspicious on my computer.

I have not tried Malwarebytes yet, but I will use that to see in the future....

I've decided to give up and simply format my hard disk and start a fresh new chapter. At this point I've tried so many things, I'm just tired of trying. I can't believe even though I was careful I still got a virus. I guess I'll have to be extra careful in the future.

    I always run:

    - Anti-vir
    - SUPERantispyware

    In addition I also have:

    - Spybot Search and destroy
    - Spyware doctor
    - Ad-aware

I'm also a careful browser. lol So I don't know. Things happen. It's all good, aslong as I still have the option to format and start over. :cool

Anyway, thank you so much for your help people. Atleast someone else could benefit from your suggestions when they come across this thread.
