I have a toshiba tecra m7 s7311 with windows xp, I have not sound at all, I installed a Realtek High Definition Audio driver from toshiba/support and made it my default driver, but still no sound. under other devices I get a big yellow question mark on Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus, I tried uninstalling this device but it comes back on as soon as I restart my computer. Does anybody has any idea what the problem might be? Help Please! P.S. I am a novice at the computer business

    Greetings, RR20.

You're probably missing a chipset driver or a chipset driver is corrupted. Try this: download and run the Intel INF utility, reboot, and see if your Device Manager symptoms have changed.

Be advised: this thread will probably be moved to the Driver Forum.

    Welcome aboard! :major

Addendum: if you're still showing the same symptoms after the chipset reinstall, try installing the Microsoft UAA HD Patch (located here or here), then reinstalling the Realtek software.

Thanks Caliban, I did as you suggested but still got not sound and still have the big yellow question mark under Device Manager Other Devices-Modem High Definition Audio Bus, can't get rid of it. I tried installing Microsoft UAA HD Patch as you suggested but it tell me that I don't need it because the Service Pack version of the system is newer than that update.

    Good morning.

Strange that a modem is possibly causing your sound issues, but strange things do happen.

Try the modem driver, see if your symptoms change.

    If not, then try this:

    1. Click Start > Run and type in regedit, then click OK.
    2. Expand (click the plus signs in front of) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, System, Current Control Set, Control, Windows.
    3. In the right panel you will see CSDVersion.
    4. Right click it, choose Modify.
    5. In the highlighted input window, you should see 300. Change it to 200.
    6. Click OK, close the Registry Editor and restart your PC.

XP will now think it's at Service Pack 2. Reinstall the MS UAA patch, and then reinstall the audio drivers.

Make sure to reboot and then test your sound before changing the value back to 300.

Then follow the same steps to change it back to SP3 (change the CSDVersion from 200 back to 300).

Keep us posted about the results.

Once again thanks, Caliban. I did what you told me, finally got rid of the big yellow question mark on the Modem on HD Audio bus, still no sound though, next I performed the other steps of changing the CSDVersion as you suggested, that didn't work either. This is what I got under Sound, video and game controllers on Device Manager:
    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio Driver
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Media Control Devices
Realtek High Definition Audio (my default sound driver)
    Video Codecs

    No sound still? Stubborn thing...

Let us look at your machine:

Please download and run Free PC Audit, a stand-alone system information tool.

When the scan completes, click 'File', 'Save As', name the report, and save to an easily found location, such as your Desktop.

Be advised: the report will display your IP Address and Windows Product Key. You may delete this information if you so wish.

Then attach that file to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

From this we may be able to determine what type of Realtek chip you've got, find some generic drivers.

Unfortunately, I don't see anything that jumps at me from the report.

Quick silly question: have you tried headphones?

One thing you might try at this point is booting to a Linux distro (Mint, Puppy and Ubuntu are all nice and easy). Download the .iso file, and burn that file as an image to a CD/DVD (ImgBurn is a good .iso burning software if you don't already have one). Make sure that your BIOS is set to boot from 'CD First', boot to that disk, and run the OS as a live environment (in other words, don't install it - just run it from the optical drive).

Try your sound with Linux - might help us decide if this is a hardware or software problem.

Still having audio problems, everything seem to be in order, I can see the bar moving in the lower right hand corner (windows volume control icon) and the device manager reports no problems, the master volumes are all unmuted and working. I just did recently notice that my function keys (mute, unmute, brightness levels, etc.) are not working which make me wonder if this might be part of the prolem why there is no audio. If you have any idea please let me know, your help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi

In SERVICES (Control Panel > Administrative Tools) check to see if the Windows Audio service is "started" and the Startup Type is "automatic" if they are good, then in the same Windows click the Dependancies tab and then write down the services listed or move the Windows to another part of your screen and open each of those services and check the same "Started" and Startup Type set to "automatic"

Can run the FixIt HERE and see if that works also.

Thanks (DavidGP). I did as you told me, Windows Audio service is "started" and the Startup Type is "automatic". Under Dependencies it shows Plug & Play and Remote Procedure Call (RPC), I checked both, Plug & Play is "started" and "automatic", the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) appears "started" and "automatic" in the Services window but when I openned its Properties window you can make up that it's suppose to be "started" and "automatic" both the words are dimmed and it doesn't allow for any adjustment. I also ran the FixIt and it told me that Windows Audio and the Windows Audio End Point Builder services mustbe running for audio to work correctly and that at least one of them wasn't running. I take it to be the Remote Procedure Call (RPC). Is there any way that I can get the RPC running? The FixIt couldn't do it. Any other suggestion?

If you press the Fn + F11 key, do the functions key work? This key combination turns the numeric keypad on and off but I am not 100% sure if it also disables the function keys.

Does anybody has an idea or know how to turn on or fix windows Remote Procedure Call (RPC)? I ran windows FixIt and it tell me that this feature (RPC) and Windows Audio must be running in order for the audio to work on my toshiba tecra m7 s7311. I checked and the RPC is not running and I have not way to get it started as it's not responding to any command or setting. Please help!
