    Hello

Im stuck without sound on a Toshiba satellite U300 11V running windows xp professional with sp2.

I cant comment on what may have caused the issue. It has happened in the past but I think a standard rollback or update of the driver was enough at the time. Some sound did come out of the computer speakers at some point during my unsuccessful attempts this afternoon, but with a very distorted and bad quality sound.

Anyway, at the moment I have The realtek HD 50.10.0.6278 driver, which I just downloaded from here ^^ and appears in the "add/remove" programs list. But the actual realtek card does not seem to be noticed by the system if I go to "sounds" or "speech" options from the control panel.

I had an error message after my last attempt at installing drivers (before rebooting) which suggested something had gone wrong and that the "device may not be working properly".
The driver which I found earlier on Toshiba's website was the version 5.10.0.5413 and didnt work either.

In the process of trying to bring the sound back, I also flashed the Bios to latest version (downloaded from toshiba's website) and rolled back windows from sp3 to sp2. Oh yea, and I even found a virus of some kind too but as you've guessed, still no luck so far with the sound!

Your help will be much appreciated, I think I've pretty much tried all I could think of + read on forums ...

    Thanks

    Alex

    Hi

Are you 100% sure the virus has been removed as lingering malware on your PC can cause the audio to not work? I would first off follow the below and then start a new thread in the malware forum area as listed and attach the logs from the guide,

then once you have a 100% clean bill of PC health then revisit this thread and follow the below.

I would at Toshiba's driver download site HERE for your model PC, download the Chipset Utility driver and install that, then reboot (must reboot to install the driver fully) then install the Microsoft UAA HD Audio driver from HERE and then the Audio for your PC from Toshiba again and reboot and test audio.

If the Audio is nto working still, then enter the Services list (found in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services) and make sure the Windows Audio service is set to Started and startup set to Automatic, also click the Dependancies tab and make sure all of the listed Services are also set to Started and Automatic and reboot and try Sound again,

    Hi David

I did my homework and got a clean bill of health. Then I reinstalled the drivers as you suggested, but still no sound :cry

Do you think it spells hardware problems (buy a new soundcard) or can you think of another option?

    Cheers

    Alex

    Hi

I just wonder if with rolling back from SP3 to SP2 that the files for the UAA driver are still on your system so this could be blocking the install of sound properly.

So try this and it involves a bit of editing the registry so just take it slowly and follow the instruction carefully as editing the registry as you may know wrongly can cause you to have to re-install Windows.

Your PC maybe at SP2 already but still see if the below works.
Do also let us know if you have any yellow ! marks in device manager?

    Hey David

I was about to try this but suddenly the laptop does not even boot up anymore. The hard drive led light comes on for a split second and that s it. Black screen all the way...

I have therefore decided to throw this laptop from the highest bridge!:tas

Thanks for your help and patience though :)

    Hi Alex

Thats not good, wonder is part of your issues where related to a failing HDD? if you have not yet decided to see how well a laptop flies, it maybe worth seeing if the HDD connection is just loose, take out the HDD and then plug it make in again, then see if it boots.

If not boot to a Windows OS CD/DVD and see if you get to the install stages, and if you do maybe a re-install of Windows maybe the best option (hope you have any important files on that laptop backed up)

hm could be. However, I think it is just my newbie self not realizing that when the laptop s batteries are ultra empty, even when plugged in it wouldnt have enough juice to start. I let it charge for a while and now it boots normally! :clap
I shall try your suggestions and post you the results

    Cheers

Ok, now let me describe to you what I just witnessed a minute ago, because it reinforces the intimate conviction I have had for a while, it being that computers are actually FEMALE!

As you have previously read in that thread, I had left the persistently annoying and soundless laptop unattended for a few days, and it had totally ran out of batteries. To the point that, even when plugged, it would not boot up.

So I let it charge for a bit and successfully restarted it, which caused me to refrain a little bit more from letting that laptop do its first test-flight from Tower bridge in London.

A couple more days pass and I finally decide to resume the task of breaking the silent treatment it had been inflicting upon me.
I have to say that my daughter having kidnapped my desktop, and my wife having turned to MY laptop, I had only but one choice : fix the last remaining computer of our household once and for all.

So here I go, booting up casually and cracking my knuckles at the thought of applying forceful majorgeeky treatment to it once again ... when I turn my attention back to the loading windows screen ... and see the desktop appear with a message along the lines of "in order to complete the installation of your new hardware, please restart the computer (yes/no etc).
Click "yes" I do, slightly bewildered, and TADAAAA the oh-so-hated but in this case much appreciated "windows opening" chord resonates through the little speakers of that moody laptop.

Now obviously, one may ask why after so many hard fought battles attempting to bring the sound back, and despite the utterly disappointing results (until now that is), I simply forgot about the annoying piece of equipment for a few days, went to see a friend or two and down some pints at my local, enjoying the momentary absence of IT issues from my daily life!:celebrate:drink:dood

After which, I casually decide to fire up the offending machine again, and here goes lady Toshiba simply acting its casually nice and cool (with sound) self again.

My take on this, as you guessed : after all, being neglected for a few days seems to have cured it from its diva-like attitude.:crybaby

Would anyone here dare chime in and confirm what I previously thought to be nothing but a remote possibility : that computers are actually female?:major

Aiight, then try this for size :

just fired it up this morning, sound still ok. I play a cartoon for my daughter : sound starts deteriorating (heavily distorted) , I reboot and no sound at all.

    Back to square one

    Hi Alex

I would be at this point tempted to save of all important files and settings from that PC, and do a re-install of Windows from either recovering the factory restore or a clean new install if you have Windows CD/DVD.

If its still the same after a clean install and prefereably no added software just Windows, Updates and all drivers (drivers are in post #3 link I left) ok in Device Manager then I would suspect faulting hardware.

I believe this to be a failing sound card, if things don't work out with what David has suggested then i would *Personally* invest in an external card, you can pick them up fairly cheaply off Ebay/ Amazon. But hopefully David's solution will work!!!

I found this though i dont know if you are the U.K or not ....

Only downside with those are they are for Win7 and Vista only and I wouldnt install them as no idea what they would break or if install at all.

Although it does lead me to a different question, what type of media is this cartoon, is it a CD, DVD, AVI, Streaming etc?

    Hi guys

I thought i would give you an update since so many tried hard to help me.
I reached a point where I could not reinstall windows after a fresh wipe because of issues when restarting (machine would not boot etc, had to remove battery and unplug-replug psu each time... weird).

So I went to my local pit stop and a talented unsung hero fixed a hardware issue ("chipset of soundcard"), put sp3 back on and installed the correct audio drivers.

    TADAAA...

    and there was sound!

It simply took me a week or two to get to that point and admit I could have gone to the shop 1mn walk outside my house and made my pockets lighter of 40 pounds, but there s something of a emasculating feeling when I cannot fix myself (or with the lights of someone like yourselves) an IT problem.

Now I have another laptop issue since today, this time on my Lenovo X61s OMG DOES IT EVER STOP????
This laptop suddenly powered off while playing a game (StarCraft2), twice within an hour.
I guess this fairly recent game makes my old pc work hard even though all settings are on "low quality" (grfx, sounds etc). Could that be a safety procedure to prevent overheating of the cores?

    here s the details :
intel core duo L7500 1.60 GHz
    2 Gb ram
    win xp pro, sp3

dont worry, I ll start a new thread with this anyway, thanks again for your lights David and Iain! :major

Cheers for the update Alez, yeah at times a reinstall of Windows (especially XP) is a good option, it looks like in the rollback more was broken that first met the eye, but glad you now have sound and cheers for letting us know :)

Yep start a new one for that issue.
