Hi, I have been having this issue for a few days now.
On the bottom right icon, my sound icon has an X on it and says "No audio output device in installed". Currently I have tried all I can:
    -Downloaded from Acer's site
    -Downloaded from Realtek's site
    -Restore from last few days
-Control panel> Add hardware > Sound, video, game controllers> Realtek > Code 10 (I did this because I did not have a "Sound, video and game controllers" on the device manager-I get a Code 10 when I do this
-Disabling and enabling from Device manager
-Uninstalling and reinstalling from Device manager
-Scanned for hardware changes (says up2date)

Acer Aspire 5520 - Vista Home Prem -

Right now, I'm bummed out of anything to do except to reset to factory settings<-- will this fix it?

    Thanks,
    Nit

    Hi Nit welcome to MG's,

Download the free, Speccy... http://majorgeeks.com/Speccy_d6358.html ...then run Speccy and click File > Save as Text File, then attach the log as per instructions below (note: as Speccy also now lists more data it likely will have your Windows licence serial key also in the log, so look for Operating System and under that Serial Number and delete the code and Save the log)

Then attach your log to your next post as per these instructions ... http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880

    Hi Nit,

You need to go into your device manager and uninstall the Realtek Audio Driver from there and also in your add/remove programs.
Download and save to your desktop, this version of driver from here...

    http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=57

Select your OS in the dropdown in the topleft corner (Vista Home Premium 32-bit).

Right now i need for you to download BUT DO NOT RUN yet driversweeper...

    http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

re start your machine into safemode (f8 at boot)
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>YOU MUST COMPLETE THESE STEPS IN SAFEMODE >>>>>>>>>>>>>

Rightclick on Driversweeper and run as an Administrator, on the lefthand side of the main pane you will see a list of options to be selected, please select the option for the realtek sound, click Analyze then click Clean (clikc clean twice as this will clean up any residual leftovers.)

re start your machine into windows, click out of any "found new hardware" prompts and, install the Driver that you saved on the Desktop, you should now have sound ;).

Also Nit you should book mark the Acer Support link that I gave you earlier in this post as it contains all of the drivers for your machine, you should infact download and save them to disc/ flash drive for future reference.

I downloaded the drive > Saved it on desktop > downloaded driver sweeper > safe mode > ran sweeper as admin > analyzed and clean(twice) > restarted

Nothing prompted me of the new hardware thing > I installed the driver that was saved. There was still no sound and it prompted me to restart for it to take action. Sound is still not there.

I went into device manager and my sound, vid and game control thing was not there. So I went to Add hardware and added the sound, vid and game control and got the Code 10 - This device canot start.

    Ok...
We need to check to see if windows audio is started in services.....

Start> Control Panel> Admin Tools> Services.... scroll down to Windows Audio and check that the service is started and set to automatic... right click>properties> make sure that the settings are Automatic and Started, do the same for the Multimedia Class Scheduler which is just a little bit higher up the list. your settings should look like mine that I have atteached for you...

    Ok nit,

You need to check in your BIOS settings to make sure that your Audio is actually enabled. check it and let me know.

I have checked my Bios, but could you tell me what I'm looking for? I couldn't find anything about Audio on it.

I just reformatted and my sounds still does not work. Also, I have a question for my DVD drive. It opens (I can see a orange light when it opens), but it does not read.

go into your bios (f1 or del) under the advanced tab Go to Itergrated Peripherals look for your onboard sound and make sure that it is enabled use the +/- keys to change its value, please do not change anything else in the BIOSas this will render your machine unusable.

can you also take ascreen shot of your Device Manager with the sound/video ang games controller tree expanded and post it here please.

    Hi nit,
Have you checked out your BIOS settings yet ?? this needs to be done before I can get you to do the next fix as it will not work if the on board sound is disabled.
Also when you formatted your machine how did you install your drivers ?? this is the best way.....

    1. Chipset driver (NVidia version 65.8.4)
    2. Audio (Realtek High Def version 6.0.1.5449)
    3. Wireless LAN (Atheros version 7.3.1.42 )
then the others can be added in any order.

I have entered my BIOS [F2] and I do not see the Integrated Peripherals. I searched up the pictures and I've noticed that it is under the Advanced tab..My bios only has..

Information - Main - Security - Boot - Exit (phoenixbios)

A picture that I found on the internet that has the same tab as mine

Could be my sound card .. I tried "dxdiag" on my search bar and on my Sound tab.

No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer

  17. iain.t

    iain.t MajorGeek

You should find the Integrated Peripherals under the "Main" tab it may be named different like on-board resources/adapters or something like that, just look under them until you see one refering to your Audio/Sound.

it could also be that your on board Audio Chip could have failed, if that is the case then you will need to invest in a usb sound card for your laptop....

    examples here....

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1G8085WDXE8VTD6D80AE

but if you want quality sound then spending a few Dollars/Pounds more then I would personally go for this....

One last strive, I went to Add hardware and saw that there was a new Realtek driver 6/14/11 and when I have tried to install, it says:

The following hardware was not installed: Realtek high def audio
An error occurred during the installation of this device
    Invalid access to memory location.

    iain.t MajorGeek

I am wondering wether or not if the driver is being unpacked properly??

ok last throw of the dice from me ..... though don't give up yet as I will ask another Guru to have a look over this thread and see if he can come up with anything extra to try ok ;).

    Download this driver from here....

    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5513

and save it to your desktop. uninstall the realtek driver from the device manager then scan for hardware changes, when prompted to search for the driver dont let windows search for it select install from a location and point it to the driver on the desktop, hopefully this will unpack it better, restart your machine and see if you have sound.

When I uninstalled the Realtek High def (did not check the delete box), it also removed my Sound, Video and game controller. I went on and scanned for hardware changes and nothing prompts me. So I cant lead it to the download file on the desktop

ok try to install that driver anyway and post back the result.
I have asked some else to take a look at this thread and see if they can come up with anything extra to try ok.

Edit....... try installing the chipset driver first from here....

    Hi

I know I'm coming in half way through the thread, Iain as you mentioned in PM, you've covered all the main bases I know I would have also.

Very possible its a hardware issue, but could be a conflict of another app, although this should now not be the same with a clean install of Windows Vista again so some thoughts going on previous info and logs posted as I noticed originally AVG and Avast where both installed.

    1. Was Vista the original Windows version installed when you got the PC or was it XP? and if so had it been working fine up until a week ago?
    2. What Service Pack is installed for Vista?
    3. Now if you have installed the drivers in the order Iain posted then you should be fine for the likes of Chipset (did you reboot once you installed the Chipset, then install the other drivers or just install then all after each other), so if your PC is not finding the hardware then try this FixIT HERE, once run dos it tell you what maybe wrong or is all ok?

If OK then try re-installing the Realtek driver from ACER again, if not then do let us know the info on the issues the scan found.

    4. Try the Audio FixIT HERE again if any issues noted let us know what they are?
    5. Try the info HERE and HERE

Could you also attach a log of your startups using the below guide

    1. Vista
    2. I believe SP2
    3. I uninstalled Realtek audio, rebooted, installed chipset, rebooted, installed audio, rebooted. The Hardware and Devices FixIt issues found "Hardware changes might not have been detected"
    4. Audio fixit's issure "Check audio device"
    5. N/A because it says I dont have any audio devices installed on my Playback or Recording

    My startup log file..
Also, I've been having AVG and Avast! both installed for quite a while, had no problems until recently 6/21/11. But since I have reset to factory settings, I dont know why i'm still having this problem.

    Hi,
I am starting to wonder wether or not that this could be an infection that is stopping things from working correctly, if you don't mind I would like for you to run through the malware removal process for your OS here.....

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

try and do all of the steps that is requested and create a thread here...

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

be patient as they can be pretty busy but one of the malware fighters will check your logs and if needed will run through some further steps with you, when you get the all clear post back here with the results.

one more question.... do you have the ability to do a clean install ?? i.e... do you have the OS install disc and would you be bothered about losing all of the data and programs you have installed, as you would need to do a full format of your drive?? if so you will need to gather the drivers for your system here....

    http://support.acer.com/us/en/produc...b=1&modelId=57

Select your OS in the dropdown in the topleft corner (Vista Home Premium 32-bit).
let me know if this is an option.

I dont think I have the OS disc, but I will run the malware removal and get back to you.

    iain.t MajorGeek

    Ok.
I think that you can make an OS disc from the one that is installed on your system I will have a read about and see if I can give you the knowlege of how to do this.

Have you got an option to make a system repair disc here... Start> all Programs> Maintenance> create a System Repair Disc... this will create a bootable copy of your OS.

"No Audio Output Device installed" - Zakka's Solution

    Greetings everyone,

Although I fully understand this is a fairly old thread now, I would like to share one method of fixing this annoying problem of having no audio.

I have a Toshiba Satellite and for about 3 years now I had battled this issue of recurring audio loss. Sometimes I would be able to fix it by deleting the old drivers and installing new ones, performing a system restore, or downloading programs from sites similar to these to perform cleanings.

The problem would only temporarily be fixed though, and would always come back.

In my case, there would be no option to uninstall and reinstall the driver from Device Manager, nor would it sometimes let me install a driver (it would say "Invalid access to memory location"), since if I installed a driver and then uninstalled it, chances are it would repair itself after a reboot.

After a long period with no audio, I noticed something in Device Manager.

    Here are the steps:
    1. Open Device Manager
    2. Click on View and then click on Show hidden devices
    3. Device Manager will refresh itself
    4. A new list will have appeared in it, Non-Plug and Play Drivers, click on it
    5. It is alphabetical, so scroll down to the M section
    6. If you see any long alpha-only or alphanumeric entries beginning with a capital M (similar to Mkkabddfs, for example) note them
    7. Note the ones that have a warning sign on them, just like the one your audio driver might have had in the past in Device Manager (showing that there is something wrong with it)

Although I am fairly competent in computer usage, I am no where near an expert. I took a risk and deleted those values, rebooted my computer, and I have not had audio loss ever since that day.

Perhaps some of the more knowledgeable members here can look into this and confirm if those corrupted values are indeed linked to the audio driver.

I just thought I would share this with you guys, so that if it can benefit someone who is really frustrated out there.

    Thanks,

    zakka
