No Audio Output Device is installed problem

    Hi,

First of all, I just want to say that I posted a thread like this about 3-4 months ago, but the problem seemed to have sorted out itself. However, it is back again which is the reason for me somewhat reposting this.

I have had this problem before (about 3-4 months ago as I said), but the problem has come back today for no apparent reason.
There is no sound on my computer at all, I am 100% sure it is nothing to do with my speakers and the sound icon on the bottom right corner of my screen has an X over it and says 'No Audio Output Device is installed' when I hover over it.

I've tried several solutions to get it back including all of the common ones, but nothing seems to be working. Even restarting my computer has not helped which sometimes got the sound working again when I had the problem before, but I have restarted 5 times now to no avail.

I am not sure if it is related, but my computer took a long time to shut down prior to this happening. Most of the time it only takes about 10-15 secs to shut down, but it took about 2-3 mins to shut down earlier today. After switching the PC back on, for some reason it could not recognize my USB adapter, but I believe that is unrelated and reinserting the adapter sorted that out.

Later on, I switched on the PC again and no sound, just like how it was 3-4 months ago. I am really disappointed because I thought the problem had sorted itself out. I am completely out of ideas of what to do except for taking it to a PC repair place, but I can't do that anytime soon because I am very busy these next 2 weeks.

    Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. Done scans as well and they have all come back clean.

    Hi,
We need more info about your machine i.e Make/Model what OS and service pack you are at. When I have this information I will be able to help you.
Depending on what OS you have download and run either one of these....
    1. Win2000/ME or XP.....
please could you also run everest ..... http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next
Choose System Summary Only > Next
Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report, then click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop is best as easy place to find it, use Browse to locate desktop)

Add the report in your next post like this.....

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880

    2. Vista/Win 7......
Download the free, Speccy http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...s&txt=http://majorgeeks.com/Speccy_d6358.html then run Speccy and click File > Save as Text File, then attach the log as per instructions below (note: as Speccy also now lists more data it likely will have your Windows licence serial key also in the log, so look for Operating System and under that Serial Number and delete the code and Save the log)

Then attach your log to your next post as per these instructions http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880

Thanks for the reply, but I just want to say that I turned on my computer this morning and the sound magically seems to be back now. But when I had this problem before, the sound would randomly go off again if I switched off the computer and switched it back on again later.

Anyway, I've run speccy anyway and followed the instructions you gave me in the thread link.

Thanks for the link, I'll download it as soon as I get enough free time.

Only audio related thing I could find in services was Windows Audio and I couldn't find anything such as soundMAX which seemed to be the audio driver you gave me the link for...? I aplogize for possibly sounding stupid, but I am not too sure what it is you want to me to search for in services, lol. I'm afraid I don't have much expreince with computers, I only know the basics.

Hey don't worry ;) we all started were you are :-D:-D

as long as you see what looks like mine in the attachments (1 and 2) everything will be ok. You will not see any reference to the Soundmax driver in Services as it is not part of you OS files.

Before you install the driver I linked for you... Uninstall audio driver through device manager and Restart computer, install the driver I linked then Restart your machine again, go back into your Device Manager and update the audio driver using windows (highlight driver> rightclick> update driver>follow prompts and restart if asked to do so).
Let me know if you have any more problems as there are other fix's that we can run through ok ;)

Sorry, didn't notice the thumbnail attachments you made in the last post, lol. Everything looks the same in my services as it did in your attachments.

Alright, I'll have to do it tomorrow though, but I'll let you know how it went as soon as I get it done. I might be able to do it in the morning if I wake up early enough, lol.
Thanks again for all the help so far. :)

    Hi,
I downloaded the sound driver this morning and everything seems fine. :)
Hopefully it will stay that way and the audio won't randomly not work any more.

Thanks for all the help! :)
