Hi all and happy holidays. I have been having this problem for almost 1 week.

My PC is Acer M1640 with Window Vista 32bit Home Premium.

My speaker icon has a red "x". I read read threads and after threads but to avail. Attached is the Everest report, Dxdiag and the pic of the sound, video under Device Manager. Windows Audio Service is enabled in Services

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
Try this to get your audio back.....

    re-install chipset driver from here.....

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...78455&Step1=DESKTOP&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE M1640&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_7

reboot after install.... then install audio driver from here...

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...98995&Step1=DESKTOP&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE M1640&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_7

reboot after install so that your system recognises the changes been made.

all of your system drivers can be(for future reference) found here.....

    http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=344

select your OS in the dropdown box.

please post back to let me know how you get on.

Hello iain.t. I did the both as instructed. My speaker icon still shows as "x".

    1. The Device Manager still shows the same 4 NIVIDIA High Definition Audio as the first attachment.

    2. Right click on the Speaker "x", it shows "No audio devices are installed" under Playback devices and Recording devices.

    3. Under Advanced Chipset (Under Setup), it shows
    nVidia Raid Setup [Press Enter]

When I press Enter, it showed the following :-

    SATA 1st Master : Disabled
    SATA 1st Slave : Disabled
    SATA 2nd Master : Disabled
    SATA 2nd Slave : Disabled

    Should they be "Enabled"?

    4. Should Azailia Audio [External Codec] be disabled (under Setup)?

    Thanks.

I think those 4 Nvidia items are related to HDMI of your video card. But you should have something regarding Realtek which is not showing up. If you go into BIOS, is there an entry to enable onboard audio?

Edit: Also make sure your Windows Audio service is started and set to automatic.

Right click computer and select manage. Then select Services.

    Happy Holidays to you!!!!

I did download Realtek as per post #2 (Audio_Realtek_6.0.1.5497_Vistax86) but it didnt show up. When I enter Setup, I click on Integrated Peripherals and enabled Azalia Audio as External Codec.

Windows Audio Service is under Started and Automatic :)

    Thanks for your help :)

When you go into Control Panel>Sound, what are the devices listed for playback? Does anything have a green checkmark?

In Device Manager, Right click the sound category and select scan for hardware changes. Does it detect any new hardware?

If it does not, try manually adding the hardware as shown here.

Edit: Make sure you create a restore point before you do this. And also only add a device called Realtek HD audio.

Have you made a Vista Recovery Disk yet. If not, do that also before you add any new hardware. Also make sure it boots correctly.

    No Audio device are Installed
Also shows nothing on "Disabled Devices or Disconnected Devices"

I did as mentioned and I received a code 10 when I was adding Realtek HD Audio. I go google what is Code 10 again. Thanks for your help :)

I do see the yellow exclamation mark under Sounds, Videos and Controllers. I click on Update and I got the following message. Pls refer to attachment.
