I'm not sure if I should post this in software or hardware.

"Every pc has this common feature that, it sounds a single beep in the system speaker at the very begining [sic] of booting."
"The single beep is issued by the post (power on self test) to indicate that the sysrtem [sic] has passed its basic tests." - http://www.computing.net/answers/hardware/beep-on-boot/35985.html

Like the fellow who started the thread above, my PC does not beep at all when it boots up. At no time does it beep (some may take this a good thing because it may indicate that I do not have memory, or other problems indicated by multiple beeps).

I have tested my m/b speaker. At the CMD prompt, type CTRL-G <ret>. The computer beeps.

Why isn't it beeping when it boots ?
    and
Is this absence of beep indicative of a more serious problem ?

It is not indicative of a problem. My computer (Dell Precision M70) doesn't "beep" at all on startup either in XP Pro or Vista Ultimate and it runs fine. I would be more concerned if you got "beeps" on startup that indicated some type of problem(s).

I wish some of my systems didn't beep during post, it's annoying... Wish they only did so only if problems were found.

...that should read "...it may indicate that I do not have memory [problems]..." of course.

Thank you for your reassurance. I think it used to beep, but it's been a long time now and I can't remember !!!

I sympathise. Fault finding, if it isn't resolved quickly and easily, is often frustrating and in vain. My old PC has unresolved faults (failure to boot ! but eventually I found a way round that one without finding a definitive cause [see some of my early posts] and that just leaves the myriad of other problems).
