No CD audio playback on any Media Player

I can play DVDs-great video and audio, I can p;ay data CDs, I can view digital photo CDs, i can save work or pictures to CD, but I can not play my audio (storebought) music CDs on any of the Media Players. I have exhausted my 1 yr warranty with HP. I bought an a620n HP Pavillion package at circuit city in Sept 2004(this sounds crazy to still be having problems). However, the HP support(online/phone) had me doing everything imaginable, including removing windows Sp2 & removing and adding all types of drivers. At one point, HP was going to send out a new driver & a tech would remove the old drive. however, HP changed their mind--saying that it couldn't be the CD drive since other things worked in it????? I do have an extended warranty with Circuity City (3 years). It took this long to get back to my CD playback issue because my mother's health plummetted the same time as my one year warranty & she recently passed away. My CD playback was the least of my worries-just did without. i was searching the HP support site this week to see if there was a patch or fix & saw a ton of updates for my a620n--however, when I try toupdate any of my drivers, i keep getting messages that drivers are up to date-no better match could be gound--drivers, DVD, & CD are working fine, etc. I see no clonflicts or yellow exclamation points when I search "My Computer".I e-mailed HP this week & told them I was browsing their site for patches or updates to my CD drive, drivers, etc & also told them I realize I am now out of warranty with them--WOULD YOU BELIEVE THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT BACK TO CIRCUIT CITY UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY TO GET A CD DRIVE REPLACEMENT. I AM REALLY TICKED--YOU'D THINK THEY WOULD HAVE SAID THEY'D HAVE DONE THIS DURING THERE WARRANTY TIME! I KEEP GETTING OxCOOD1197 errors--WMPlayer can not play the file. Again none of the other players can play my CDs either. I can play the AOL radio & listen to radio players' music just fine. I downloaded iTunes the other day--it couldn't play music (audio) CD either. All of the players tell me to please put in a CD, which I have done--it is as if the CD drive can not read any of the audio CDs. I just asked my son to give me his homemade CD that one of his friends left here-never thought of trying one of those types--just to see if any of my media players will play it. At any rate, i performed a CD diagnostics on iTunes & this is what it says(hope it's not too long). Appreciate any help or ideas--& if you agree that I need to take my computer tower back to CC to get my CD drive replaced. Here's what iTunes CD diagnostics had to say:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

    HP Pavilion 061 PC028A-ABA A620N

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.

Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

this is a very dumb question, but it got me too...did you check the volume control panel to see that the cd player volume is up and not muted?
you can access it by double-clicking the speaker icon on the task bar or in your sounds and audio devices control panel and then click advanced under the device volume slider.

also is says you have 2 drives, does the audio cd play on the other drive?

Hi TimW: My volume controls are on. I can listen to sound-video clips or various radioes--Ex: AOL radio. I have even talked to a friend using some type of audio thing through AOL & IM's. I can not play CDs in either drive. When I put a DVD movie into the DVD drive, it plays-great sound & video. I can play data CD's. Ex: my real estate review disk works & my son's algera review disk workd. i can view digital photos when I insert a CD, just won't play my storebought music CDs. My son just gave me a CD that his friend left-homemade CD of favorite songs-am going to see if it plays. This is so weird that only my ausio music CDs won't play 7 everything else works on the computer.

I'm back--now I am getting COOD11C error--says problem with something else in operating system not communicating to WMP10. I tried iTunes again & couldn't get any playback. however, WMP is now listing 16 tracks, but puts an exclamation point & gave a message that this type of document does not have a security certificate. Under protected, it lists"NO" & wmpcd://0/1 audio cd. I believe the iTunes player said failed trying to read media. I am going to try to play the home made CD of my son's friend--just to see if it's some type of security issue

    C00D11CD: Unknown error
Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error. This can occur when another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to Windows Media Player.

Just wanted to say that I tried that homemade CD--ended up it was an old CD of my older son's & I had to download something from Sony to play it--but it brought up some visual things--of an alternative band called "Fuel". I could either purchase the CD or Buy it or there were a few minutes of sample songs from the CD & I WAS able to hear the songs. However, my computer started acting weird. I got a black screen & I thought I crashed. Then something popped up for me to load a CD, then screen went black again. I shut down the computer, turned it back on-went to All Programs, found new ly installed program "Fuel" and deleted it-sent it to the Recycle Bin & then permanetly deleted it. At least I got a CD to play. For whatever this is worth. Guess I will probably end up taking the tower back to Circuit City to see if they can get my CD drive to function--this has me baffled. Unless I have something else wrong such as one of the guys from the forum asked if I had an area checked in the device device manager to enable playback in the CD audio. Perhaps there is something else I have to check or clear in another area?? Thanks again for trying to help me. Audrey214

You are missing some codecs ....look at this and download it ...it will tell you which are needed or are corrupt.
    http://avicodec.duby.info/

and it could be the WMP10 that is the trouble ....would uninstall and download wmp9.

Would also suggest you get your xp disc, go to start / run / type "sfc /scannow"
without qoutes (note space) and be prepared to put in the disc. Let it run ...it may find stuff it may not.:)

that fuel cd has some promotional stuff on it so to deter people from copying it. (but it's still possible) as to my earlier question...if you have the volume control that says "cd audio" above it , muted or the slider all the way down, you will not hear anything when you play audio cd's. that particular volume control has nothing to do with dvd's, or the ability to hear other sounds and internet radio sites...however, it does sound like you have some other issues there...

I believe you can contact MS$ and for a small fee they will send you a replacement disc ....

Download this and see if you have the same problems:
    http://majorgeeks.com/VLC_media_player_d4674.html

It will play any audio cd's ....if it doesn't, then the issue may be a bad cd player.
