no cmd file

Im trying to help a neighbor with pc I may have created some of the problems by trying to get rid of some @#&*# aol $%#* anyways this pc has never been on line is using 98 windows after connected today to internet downloaded zone alarm and avast (for security) I have no docmention or as to 98 windows no disks ect.. amtech pc cannot run microsoft update scan get error 0x800c0005 accordingly instuctions are to reregister dll files using this procedure start... run... type cmd click open when I do this I get this error "cannot find the file cmd (or one of its components) make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libraries are available" I think I gonna need lots of help with this one still have multitudes of aol files scared to delete after being told they attch to windows files and deleteing them will meeup windows

 

Tried that got MS-DOS prompt. Black screen with following message
Specified command search directory bad then further down
microsoft bla bla bla... then at bottom
c:\windows\desktops>

 

was able to fix problem I was having as far as microsoft unable to scan for updates appears IE was corrupted had to download firefox for sp1 update and then using IE download again anyways that fixed that problem still havent checked to see if command exe or cmd will bring up anything will let you know anyways when I did get the critical updates there were 44 of them anyways thats all taken care of now needed to come home and play on mine now.....later

thanks for the link still can't bring up command file it least pc is running and working ok will see if the patch works I run scan disc(through) found no errors and defrag-ed Tried to back up files and ran out of floppys (10) how many disc should it take to make back up files 98 windows with either 3 or 4 gig hd am i doing something wrong?
