No comm with scanner

Suddenly, after 3 years with no problems, my 3-in-one Canon MP130 only works as a printer/copier. Clicking on "SCAN" produces the error message "No comm with scanner. A cable may be loose or disconnected." Of course, the cable is fine, because it uses the same cable to transmit print commands. Also, my notebook can connect and print/copy/scan with no problems with the same cable.

The Hardware Device manager shows a yellow "!" beside the device with the info that the device may not work properly. I have uninstalled and clean reinstalled with no improvement. I also uninstalled/reinstalled the composite USB device with no improvement.

I can only guess that CCleaner, or Advanced System Care removed something it shouldn't have, but returning to previous restore points hasn't helped. Also, I uninstalled both ZoneAlarm and Avast, but still the problem existed. Perhaps Spybot removed something and is prohibiting entry?

I'm using WinXP Home SP3 and am stymied. Thanks for any suggestions.

Check to make sure WIA (Windows Imaging Aquisition) service is started.

When you reinstalled, did you use the latest drivers and/or software?

Yes.......latest driver was 2007, so I've been good for a few years. Also, the unit has continued to work just fine with my notebook computer. The notebook does not use the same firewall or anti-virus program, and I haven't used a registry cleaner on it for awhile. That's why I'm thinking that the problem lies there somewhere.

Incidentally, on "My Computer-Control Panel-Scanners and Cameras" there is no scanner device listed. Does that suggest a direction to troubleshoot ?

Going to the Canon link, I find a driver with the following information -

MP130 MP Driver Ver. 700a for Windows XP/2000
    mp130mpd700a38u-01win2kxp_usz.exe
    Version 700a
    File Size 24.65 MB
    Date Posted 04/07/2010

Can you double check your driver version as installed now and compare with the above.

I downloaded the updated driver, unzipped it, and ran the Setup. No change in the "No comm with scanner....etc". By the way, I can't find any place on the MP130 program to confirm what driver it is using.

By the way....my laptop has never updated the driver for the MP130 but works fine.....it doesn't have this scanner issue.

Another thing.....on My Computer/Scanners and Cameras, it doesn't list my MP130, but it is listed under Printers. In case that helps troubleshoot.....

More info........the computer does not "see" my webcam or my Nikon camera either.
