    Hi Folks,
    I'm running a 2gHz dell desktop with Vista sp2

After doing a windows update I have encountered a problem with no desktop ICONs showing.

Let me start from switch on; windows seems to load up as normal finally waiting for me to logon. When I click to logon I see the windows welcome screen and the circle showing activity - then the screen goes blue with the following message; "C:\windows\system32\userinite.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
    CS:11f7IP:0106 OP:ff ff a3 0100.
Choose close to terminate the application".

When I click close the screen is solid blue with a mouse pointer that I can control - no ICONs. If I press Ctrl,Alt, Del I can open the task manage and only see the following processes:
    csrss.exe
    Taskeng.exe
    Taskmgr.exe
    winlogon.exe

If I then click the services tab there are lots of services running and lots stopped. If I then click the services button within this tab I could see loads of services stopped. I compared each service with my other vista computer and started as necessary, this has not helped.

If I run windows explorer from the "run new" command in task manage the desktop appears and I can access the internet and other files as normal. However, if I try a system restore I get the following message "Shadow copy service not working , see event log (can't find it !) and the code 0X81000201

I've also run a SFC and windows tells me that it can't fix some files - details in the CBS.log (can't find this either). Also tried lots of malware programs-none worked !
Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Regards
    Geoff.

I don't know if this will be of much help but, the CBS log file is located in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\.

    How to analyze

The Eventvwr logs are apparently only viewable in Eventvwr. Enter eventvwr in the search box and open it or:

    1. Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button http://res2.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/windows%20vista/main/4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_47.png, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.* http://res1.windows.microsoft.com/resbox/en/windows%20vista/main/18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_41.png If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. Click an event log in the left pane.
    3. Double-click an event to view the details of the event or right click and select Properties

This of course is when you are able to bring up your Desktop.
