No desktop icons in safe mode

I rarely go into Safe Mode, but when I did the desktop came up with my icons on it just like it does in normal mode. It doesn't anymore. I can click on Start/my name/Desktop and a list will appear, but no icons at all on the desktop. It's just black with Safe Mode in white letters in all four corners.

I just went to Safe Mode to uninstall a security program and discovered after I got there that I must have mistakenly placed the uninstaller file in the trash. When I click on the above and that list appears the Recycle Bin isn't there so I had to restart in normal mode, take that file out of the trash and then restart in Safe Mode again.

I had just run scf /scannow and file checker too a couple of days before this.

    Can anyone offer any help?

this is normal and can last for a couple minutes before you actually get your desktop. i always get that black screen first on my WinXP Home; have always gotten it.

if it's lasting a VERY long time (like 10 minutes), and you never get your desktop, then i don't know what to tell you.

It doesn't go away. The icons don't appear. I'm using Vista Home Premium SP2.

tried and took SP2 for a test spin too.wreaked other kinds of havoc(no elaboration necessary).removed SP2 via installed updates voila things worked as they should on this Vista Home Premium OS,back to SP1 it had.actually thought I might have to use the recovery discs made before anything else was installed but removing that update did the trick so far.

I haven't had problems like you apparently have, but there are some oddities. For one thing, if I click on any kind of installation file it takes forever for it to open -- I'm talking anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes. Used to just pop right open. I don't know if this is from SP2. Actually, this didn't start until perhaps a month ago. But then I don't know how this stuff works. Maybe there is a delayed reaction before the problems kick in. Sure wish I could figure out what is causing that slow reaction because it drives me crazy to have to wait that long for an installation file to open up. Could this also be from SP2, do ya' think?

any chance you're using a specific Kaspersy product? specifically, KIS 2010 version 9.0.0.463 or 9.0.0.736. if not, ignore this. if so, i can give you some info (not on the black screen in Safe Mode, but on slow loading of your programs/browser).

for what it's worth, i have heard Vista likened to ME in a few places. i have no experience with it since i'm under XP, but those who have discussed issues with Vista felt it wasn't "fully formed" which is probably why 7 came out so fast. that's not my opinion, just info i've read.

I am not using Kaspersky, but I wonder if your info might still apply or help me out. I was using BitDefender Internet Security 2010, which had been a nightmare ever since I installed it on Oct. 5th. Then they came out with a major product update on Nov. 3rd that literally almost put everyone using it down. That forum is just roaring! Tech support still has no fix and I uninstalled 2 nights ago and went back to version 2009.

I'm thinking this slow down started occurring after Oct. 5th when I installed the 2010. However, it has not improved now that I've gone back to 2009.

I had also installed IE8 a short time before installing BDIS 2010 and I thought it was working fairly well, and then it just started getting worse and worse and I finally uninstalled it; however, now I'm wondering if that was a BD problem rather than an IE problem because the 2010 BD program wasn't working well to start with and that major update they came out with screwed up just about every part of a working system it could, including Internet connections.

If you'd like to share that info about Kasperksy, perhaps it could help me with my problem.

I'm not sure what to do about the SP2. I installed the SP1 and everything really worked great. Then I waited about a week and installed SP2 and I do recall some changes in operation that I just didn't care for and know I did have thoughts of uninstalling. Perhaps I should and see if that improves anything.

sounds very familiar to what i went through with KIS 2010. bottom line: i was just about ready to downgrade to 2009 when the hotfix was announced. it was available a couple days later and things have improved quite a bit. it could be a little better, but i'm perfectly happy with how it's running after the last hotfix.

i got a lot of help & information from the Kaspersky forums, hopefully BitDefender is the same. try their forums to see if they can help on what may be BDIS specific issues. it may simply be a case of downgrading to the last stable version and waiting to upgrade when it's fixed i tried the top 3 (BDIS, ZAExtreme, KIS) before ultimately deciding on KIS. i think they were all going through some similar issues, i just ended up choosing KIS.

also, when installing any Windows updates (mind you, i only know about XP), i take this approach: i set automatic updates to "off" or "only tell me" and check the update page through IE (i don't click on the icon & since i use Firefox, this is the only thing i use IE for). i install all small updates as a group, and wait to install any SP, IE, .NET, Office, etc. i always choose the Custom option, not the Express.

i do each of these (IE, .NET, Office, SP, etc.) individually and separately so i'm not sitting around watching paint dry. be sure to read what hotfixes are offered, what they do/what they're for, and uncheck or hide the ones you really think you don't want (if you don't use IE except for updates, don't bother with all that Searchlight and Live stuff). this is what i found caused me the least amount of headaches.

just be aware, "some of the medicine may be worse than the disease" until they get a better handle on Vista. was true for XP for a year or more.

only if it applies: one final tip, do NOT install any SP if you have a different bootscreen than the one that came with. "it" doesn't like that. set your system back to the original bootscreen before trying to install any SP.

    1. post your specific questions at BDIS forums, do what they ask & be patient ;)
    2. uninstall your SP2 (maybe try again after you update everything else)
    3. set automatic updates to "off" or "just tell me"
    4. go to MS update through IE; do NOT click on the icon (don't put them off too long; get them as soon as you can).
    5. pick and choose what you want & install a bit at a time
    6. try SP2 again if the "bootscreen" info applies
    7. if things were okay with SP1, just don't install SP2. just do the hotfixes.

    hope this helps

oh, about the Windows update icon in your tray. if it's too annoying to look at, set your taskbar to "always hide" that icon.

XP instructions: right click on Start, click Properties, click Taskbar tab, "check" the Hide Inactive Icons, click Customize, click on each one and set it to Always Show, Always Hide or Hide When Inactive...whichever you prefer. Vista probably has something similar.
