No e-mail with Outlook

I use Windows Vista (SP2) and MS Office 2007 with Outlook (Version
12.0.4518.1014) however the computer crashed irretrievably a few weeks ago and the drive was formatted and Restore CD's used to recover the OS and programs.

All was well until a couple of weeks ago when Outlook became unusable and I used webmail to send and read e-mails. If I manage to open Outlook the mouse becomes invisible as it passes over Out:-o:cry:crylook on the screen and nothing responds to activity ("Not Responding").

I have uninstalled and reinstalled MS Office TWICE with no improvement. I am considering moving all the data to another drive (if I have space!) and the formatting and reinstalling. Overall, that is a bit drastic but I am stuck! Please can anyone help?

    Thanks

Hello DGGS:wave I am a bit confused, as Vista comes with Windows Mail, not Outlook.. I don't even know if Outlook Express will work with Vista:confused Are you sure you don't have Windows Mail?

As for your system crashing, did you find the problem as to why? Might want to go to the Malware thread, and do a READ AND RUN ME FIRST to check for any issues.. Best of luck to ya;)

Indeed, you are a bit confused. DGGS said nothing about Outlook Express. He's using Outlook, a component of MS Office 2007.

Did you install protection apps (anti-virus, etc.) soon after installing Windows? How did Outlook act when it first become unstable? Any error messages?

Siince you fomatted and reinstalled Windows just a few weeks ago and you're already having these problems, I agree a second try at formatting and reinstalling may be the best thing to do here, although it's a headache to do it.

Hi and many thanks for your input. I don't use Windows Mail and prefer a POP3 based program such as Outlook (when it works!) I could use Windows Mail (web based isn't it?) but I can use my POP server in a web-mail based fashion as an emergency cover.

I have no idea what caused the original crash at all -there were NO error messages or warnings, just the crash. I use Avast ant-virus and that didn't report any problems. I use Lavasoft Ad-Aware too and both of these items didn't report any major infections.

Oh well, I will try to transfer all my data over. I use online backup (Mozy) but even that is problematical at the moment. Mayb e I should start sending postcards rather than e-mails!

    Thanks for your help anyway!

Windows Mail is a POP3 email client, meaning you can setup a POP account in Windows Mail and download messages to your hard drive, as all POP email clients (Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, etc.) do. So, you may want to try Windows Mail, although that won't fix your problem with Outlook.

    Hi

While I use Avast, I find its email scanning capability like many Antivirus email add-ons problematic with Outlook so dont enable them as in the main they are not needed as the main scanner will scan any emails and attachments anyway.

But you could before full re-install try the following.

    1. Uninstall the Email component from Avast or disable it from the Avast menus then reboot and test again.

    2. Disable the Add-ons in Outlook and instructions are here then restart Outlook and test, if all ok then enable one add-on at a time to try and find the culprit.

    3. Uninstall Office again and then run this tool and remove any application thats related to Office if found, then run CCleaner and its Cleaner and Registry tools (run the Registry one until nothing is found to be removed) and then re-install Office.

Maybe better if you want a backup email client to go with Windows Live Mail as Windows Mail is not now developed.

I see you have used a restore CD to recover your system and programs. That suggests that the version of Outlook you were using was a time limited trial version, as they don't give away full versions of Outlook.

If that could be the case, and you don't want to pay for Outlook, then good alternatives are Mozilla Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail. Both do POP3 or IMAP.

Many thanks for this. I have actually discovered the delights of Windows Mail (I managed to get it OK). I can use it as POP3 (which is important to me for ease of use) and it seems to work!

Thanks - yeah, I discovered the delights of Windows Mail and it seems the perfect alternative to Outlook!:)
