I created a partition on a Maxtor 4D040H2 38GB hard drive slave. While formatting, the format window in Manage, said that NTFS files were being installed. When I tried to send files there, after formatting, to store them, I recieved a prompt saying there was no recognizable file system. This PC is in a Dell OptiPlex GX115, 863mhz., pent.III processor, 320 GB Ram. The OS is XP Pro SP2.
I appreciate any advice that I can get. You guys are the best!

In Disk Managment what is the status ( main window status column) of the drive?

reboot and open Disk Management, On the Action menu, click Rescan Disks andsee if it changes its status.

    Thanks Halo,
In Managment, it says that the drive is healthy. In the top portion of the window that lists volumn, layout, etc. everything is listed except the file system and that is blank. Should this drive be disk 1? Drive 0 is the C: drive. After reboot and rescanning, the status is the same. Could this drive have physical damage?
    Thanks again....................Pianoman101

yes it normally would say Disk 1 2 3 etc

Try to reformat the drive again, also right click the drive in Disk Managment and what are the options ( vaguely remember something about activating/set active or mounting the drive ) listed?

even tho your drive is most likey not a Seagate, it maybe a good idea to run through their guide and just start from the beginning..... delete the partition on that drive and start afresh http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/install_xp_disk_mgmt.html ( but DO not convert )

to delete the partition use these steps http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000#XSLTH3150121123120121120120

Ok, I tried to load windows XP SP2 onto that drive and did the partition and formatt again and the installation was stopped with this prompt " .Sif File is corrupt or missing." value o on the line in section (source Disk files) With key "SP2.cab."
I exited the installation and checked in My Computer and the drive is there and I can get to the "Properties" now. I sent a small text file there and it saved the file on the drive, so I tried to download a large file (Limewire) and it was listed in the drive but when I tried to install it, it freezes the PCa and I have to cold Boot the system.
Can I down load the files that are missing or corrupt to solve this and where or what folder do I download to?
Thanks again for all your help.......................pianoman 101.
