Hi, I am installing XP on a VISTA machine I just purchased. It appears that i need drivers for the networking. I have no internet connection, because I have no networking. Can anyone help me get this fixed so that i can connect to get more help with the other drivers?

If you can supply the name of the driver needed, I'm sure that it can be found.
    start>control panel>system>device manager
Look for ! icon on network adapters
double click on entry and then click on Driver Tab
Manufacturer and driver version number should be listed there

    IEEE 1394 BUS HOST CONTROLLERS
    OHCI COMPLIANT HOST CONTROLLER VE

THis is the one that keeps me from connecting to my network, right?

There is another list of devices that have (!)
    base system device x3
    coprocessor
    ethernet controller x2
    hp webcam
    PCI device
    SM bus controller
    unknown device
    video controller

Actually it is the one labeled "ethernet controller x2" that is most likely the problem.

  5. EVELYN

    EVELYN Private E-2

there is no information on these devices. say "UNKNOWN"

is there another way to connect to the internet, and have a program scan for the devices?

  6. joelsz

    joelsz First Sergeant

There are several websites that will scan your computer for drivers that are needed, but of course you need to first get on the internet to use them.
Sort of a modern catch 22.
What is the make and model of the computer?
It is possible that the maker's website would have the drivers or at least the names of the drivers listed there.

You see my delema. I will try the HP site. It is a HP Pavilion dv9727cl. I didn't think of that. I hope they used this computer for XP and it wasn't built only for VISTA. I will post my success or lack of it.

THe hp link requires an internet connection once it is installed. I will try the other site you recommended. any additional thoughts would be appreciated.

I have reached another road block. I have installed all of the updates from HP and for windows and I still have some devices that will not work. the big yellow ? is on

OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host controller

    other devices
    base system device
    coprocessor
    ethernet controller
    HP webcam
    PCI Device
    SM bus controller
    video controller

I purchased the recommended Driver Genius, but I can figure out how to use it exactly. I open the tools and found auto-install, but I have to unlock that feature and I can't really find the place where it is. Any help here? thanks.

I'm sorry to say that I don't have any experience with "Driver Genius".
Reading about it, it looks like it will simply catalogue and reinstall drivers that are already on your computer, not find drivers that are missing.
    http://www.driverguidetoolkit.com/
offers a shareware detector that claims to be able to locate drivers for devices that are listed as "unknown" by Device Manager.
I've not used it myself, but it might be of some help.
I'll keep looking and get back to you if I find anything else.

Thanks for the link. Should I be buying the 2 days for $7? or will the free version work for what I am doing?

  17. joelsz

    joelsz First Sergeant

    I'm trying it right now.
    I'll be right back

  18. joelsz

    joelsz First Sergeant

I can't see how this one works.
It obviously can find already installed drivers and can check for updates, but I don't see anything about identifying what drivers ae needed or supplying those drivers.
    I'll keep looking

  19. EVELYN

    EVELYN Private E-2

i ran the scan and it found the unknown devices. It looks like if i pay for 2 days @ $7, they will tell me. which is fine if it really works, but half the time I pay and then it wasn't what i needed anyway.

  20. joelsz

    joelsz First Sergeant

$7 seems like a reasonable gamble.
I'm not having any luck finding anything better.
Let me know if you succeed
    good luck

I don't understand why they are telling you the first section of this.
I don't see any harm you could do by downloading each of these and running the exe files, but why create recovery discs for Vista?
I think you be fine to simply start where it says:

"Here are the drivers for XP to your notebook:"
and download each link and run the exe.

WELL, i guess it has beat me. I got all of the devices but 4. I can't get them to install new drivers. I will give it one more go this morning, and then I am abandoning it. Thanks for your help, you certainly lead me in the right direction. I appreciate it very much. I will be back, as I have problems all the time with WINDOWS. I am righting this on a MAC, but it is too much of a learning curve on the software to get my work done. if i ever get a break from the windows problems, i can play around with it. I haven't put it to the test, but so far no weird locking up and crashes. With a little attention, i think i could figure out the filing system and all. take care, and many thanks again.
