This is a long one, so hang in there. I started out by helping my neice with a malware problem. The Computer is 4 year old Dell desktop with wired connection to DSL modem. After several trips to clean the computer, I also noticed they were running just Norton Antivirus and no firewall. I uninstalled Norton and installed the Comodo Pro firewall. Also, because the malware prevented any updates, windows update initiated .Net 2 to 3.5 upgrade, SP3, and IE8.

Thats when the fun began. I should have never allowed the upgrade when I was still finishing the malware removal (to many variables). Anyway, the sound, internet connection, and printer didn't work after the upgrade. I went to device manager and it was empty. I found several links to fix that problem and got device manager working again. Also, windows installer wasn't working so by the instructions for fixing that, I uninstalled SP3 made the fix and then reinstalled SP3. That now works.

The problem is that the internet connection is still not working even when I disable the comodo firewall. I go into device manager and there are 3 entries under Network Adapters. 1 is the card itself and it says everything is working normal. The second and 3rd items are the card with two different symatec drivers and it says they not working properly. I went to uninstall the driver and it wouldn't let me. If I go into internet connections and select Add, it gives me an error 701 (I think) message saying there is a configuration error. With all that has happened, I still feel it's related to the SP3 because internet connection was there at the beginning and even after Comodo got installed (which I have disabled for T.S.).

Any help with this would be appreciated,

    Thanks

IE 8 has been known to block connection to the internet for some people. Go into add/remove programs and see if IE 8 is listed. If it is, remove it, reboot and see if internet connectivity is restored.

I agree but I'm at the last of the cleanup and I have been at this for over 3 weeks. I had the device manager problem which was because of the SP3 upgrade and this happened about the same time. I will finish the malware cleanup first, but in the meantime, I'll run the norton removal tool to make sure it's completely off the system. I'll let you know how that goes and when I've been given a clean bill of health on the computer...

    Thanks,

    Joe

Removing Norton is a great idea. Many times I have seen it completely block internet access and the only way to restore it was to get rid of Norton using their removal tool (link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_T...mNRT_d4749.html). When this has happened, changing all the settings in Norton made no difference.... so, clean out Norton using DomLuc's info above, and that should restore internet connectivity as long as you have the correct drivers installed. Removing IE8 as plodr suggested won't hurt either. Since you didn't post the model of PC, we have no way of helping with the drivers...

I should have gotten the model number, but forgot. I'll try and get that next time I go over there. I ran Norton removal tool 3 times and ccleaner and no difference. I went in and made sure the LAN settings were set to automatic. I removed IE 8 and no difference. I did go into a cmd window and typed ipconfig /all and it displayed nothing.

I am still at the tail end of the malware removal, so if you want me to wait, I can do that.

    Thanks,

    Joe

I know this might sound stupid but have you tried going to start type in services.msc press enter and see if your DNS Client is set to automatic started if not then on general tab, highlight it, right click go to properties select automatic apply, then click start apply then ok then click log tab and check it is enabled.

I checked the services and DNS client was automatic. I checked for the basic services and they were automatic. I walked through the diagnostics and reset the TCP/IP and no difference. I was able to ping 127.0.0.1 and it worked, but didn't have a different IP to ping, so didn't do that. Ran the diagnostic log and saved it - the network card doesn't have anything by it which is strange. The card itself is working but it still feels like something is blocking it. The service is a DSL box and it doesn't require much for setup (which I walked through again).

I'm not very good with this stuff so maybe it's something simple and I'm not seeing it?

I still have not been given the all clear from the malware forum, but I'm sure I'm on my last round with that since the last combofix was to cleanup some leftover norton stuff...

I was given the all clear by the malware forum. I'm wondering if I should try and uninstall and install the network driver? I'm running out of idea's...

    Thanks,

I had a similar prob before and it was due to a conflict with comodo and other programs i had on my machine.

Try unistall comodo and reinstall it but when it asks you what you want to put on just use the firewall by its self (enterprise lever firewall i think its called) when i did this it seamed to work well
it seamed like when i used any other combo of comodo it locked me out of half of my system functions and was conflicting with avast but when i did just the fire wall by its self and put on avast every thing was butter

Hmm, the netdiag log only has infornation on your dial-up modem, the network card details are missing, could you check in Device Manager and make sure that it is installed?

If you could give us your Dell Service Tag code, we can check the hardware and drivers needed for the computer.

Paradoxdream - I already uninstalled Comodo to ensure it wasn't the problem.

The network card is installed and it says it's operating correctly, but there are two other drivers (the network card and a symatec driver assn) that says there is a problem. I tried uninstalling and it won't uninstall. I thought disabling them may make a difference - no difference. I ran the norton uninstall tool 3 times and it didn't remove these. I was tempted to unistall the network card driver completely and then reinstall to see if that would clear it up.

I'll get the service tag code - where would that be located (outside of box or is it in a file on the computer) ?

    Thanks,

    Joe

Yes - it was symantec. I'll get the code tonight and post.

    Thanks

I decided to uninstall and reinstall the network card driver. That worked - all is back to normal. It also removed those two symantec drivers as well. Thanks for all the help and I think I can finally move on to something else...
