    Hi all,

I am trying to update a friends PC and install some AV and firewall software, but i am unable to connect to the internet.

I am clean from spyware/ malware as checked by TimW. I have installed a Belkin Wireless G USB adaptor, F5D7051 (ver 1), I can see my Sky ( Sagem f@st 2504) router, but am unable to connect.

I get the same with IE and Firefox.
The network connection appear to be okay, but unsure.

    Please help!!!!

I only have the windows firewall installed, will try disabling and connecting. Will also add IE as an exception.

Tried wired connection also? In Internet Explorer 8 Under Tools you can try the Diagnose Connection Problems...In Control Panel, open Network Commections and righr click on each and choose Properties to check out status. Imagine Device manager shows the hardware is working properly, if not you may need to reinstall driver for wireless device. If the wireless router uses encryption you will need a pass phrase or key. Open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all for info on your connection also.

    Hi Bugballou,
    I have IE7, this didn't work.
Wired- The network port does not seem to work, there are no lights appearing and it doesn't detect a known working cable being connected.

I have used Revo uninstaller to remove the driver, rebooted, then reinstalled the drivers. still nothing.

    The ipconfig /all didnt work.
My Status still says: Acquiring network address.
the Address Type is showing: Invalid IP Address.

not to long ago my wife's in law had some stability issues with his Xp OS,he did a offline reformat & reinstall ,same problem, wouldn't connect online,so i suggested the he perform another repair install directly wired to the modem this time, while towards the end he was prompted to update the machine, and his connection was reestablished, but this will install IE8 and all the subsequent patches as well ,and he was back online again , my guess was that the drivers & winsocks were corrupted somehow during his offline reinstall , this wasn't a wireless system issue since this unit had always been connected to a modem before the first repair ,I am wondering if you can establish the online connection with a wired repair installation , maybe everything else like the wireless drivers will be live again,
not sure if this will work for you ? but maybe worth a try since you haven't installed anything else yet

When I connect via a cable, the PC does not recignise a cable is inserted. There are no lights on the network socket.

Also there is no CD/DVD drive connected, and I do not have a Windows XP disc to restore from. I do have the licence key on the side of PC case, so if anyone can provice a link to download a copy of the Windows XP cd that would be great.

Can you post a screenshot of its output? Before doing so make sure that both the wireless and ethernet adapters are enabled and that both are set to obtain an IP address automatically. Also have the cable connected and check that the PC can still see the router.

Need to check something - when you say ipconfig /all didn't work, did you first open a command window, or did you type the command straight into the Start > Run box? If the latter it would appear not to work, but type cmd into the Start > Run box first and it will.

Apologies if you already know all of this.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

One other thing you might try, especially since you're using a wireless USB adapter: click Start/Control Panel/Internet Properties/Connections/LAN Settings - make sure anything in 'Proxy server' is NOT checked - OK out, and open a browser window, see if your symptoms change.

Of course, this has nothing to do with your onboard or PCI network adapter problem (what do you have, btw: Realtec, Intel, what?) - still need to get that cleared up.

All looks pretty dead! Can you ping the router by IP address?

  12. Captain Drift

    Captain Drift Corporal

No, I am unable to ping anything.
Everything else is working okay, which is annoying.

Both adapters are showing as working normally in Device Manager? If so, it would seem DHCP isn't working for some reason, but you could try setting the IP addresses and DNS servers to fixed addresses in each adapter's Properties.

    Hi all,
    ISSUE RESOLVED.

I manually assigned an IP address, rebooted ad everything is now working.
Not sure why it cannot automatically obtain an IP address.
Happy Days. Now to update from Sp2
