I have an acer computer that I can't get a wired connection to the internet...win 7 home premium...downloaded drivers from nvidia for ethernet...no go...tried release/renew...no go...the address that is currently being displayed is a 169 number...tried uninstalling the ethernet drivers and reinstalling...no go...tried disabling adapter and reenabling...no go...I am stumped :cry

I think (don't quote me on this), that the 169 number is coming from windows itself because for some reason or another your machine can't access your DHCP Server.
Are you sure that your ports are good? On your computer and router.

How long has it not been working?
Are you really on a domain? It looks like it wants to log in to the domain controller. The domain controller would issue the IP information.

The fastest work around is to go to a wired computer that is working, open the command prompt and get it's ipconfig /all information. Then copy that info into the non-functioning computer's network setting properties for the Local Area Connection, TCP/IP properties, all exactly the same except for the first number, the IPv4. For that you want to change the last number to something far away from the others.

Test to see if that gives you at least some connection. You might not get too much farther if it is looking for the domain controller as it seems it may be.

I just reinstalled win 7 and it hasn't worked since...I tried what you suggested and it didn't work...it seems to be a win 7 problem because the adapter is working just when I plug my cat5 cable in it searchs but finds only the 169 number...

You tried giving it a static ip number? What range is your network in? What is the gateway?

Remove the domain name and settings unless you have a domain controller on your network. This is not like having a workgroup name. Workgroup name you can make up and set to whatever you want. To set your computer for a domain, you need to have a server that is controlling the network.

I am so confused...lol...I tried using the settings from another computer but that didn't work...169.254.176.192 that's my address at the moment...what do you mean what range is my network in?...default gateway is 192.168.100.254...this has me so stumped...I think I'm ready to take her to the shop and see what they come up with...thankyou for taking the time to help and thanks to spock for replying

I'm suspecting that you did this part but just in case :

On a computer that is wired and working, go to the command prompt and use the ipconfig /all command to see the IP settings on that machine.

ex. computer works on wired IP
    192.168.100.2
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.100.254
    dns
    192.168.100.254

On the computer that is not working wired I would go into network settings and enter in the numbers rather than let them be found automatically and use something like:

ex. computer not working wired -- manually entered numbers
    192.168.100.166
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.100.254
    dns
    192.168.100.254

There is only one number that is different between the examples and the numbers are far apart.

The part I don't think you did yet:

It might still not work because you are setup in a domain. Go through the network setup wizard again and blank out the domain name. A workgroup is fine, a domain is not.

You named the domain name the same as your PC. It is looping back to you looking for the server. You have to get rid of the domain.

I did the first part by entering the settings from a computer that is working...didn't work...the computer says it is in the public domain with unidentified network...I can't seem to set up a new network it won't let me...all it does it open the network and sharing window...I am writing this on the line that doesn't work on that computer but it does for this computer so I know the cable is fine...I dual booted with a windows 7 pro with home premium and that os was stuck too...so I am gathering that there is more wrong with the acer than appears...I will bite the bullet and take it in and see if maybe they can figure out what is wrong with it or what I'm doing wrong...again thankyou for trying...
