Here is the issue> I have a number laptops on a domain at work. when the user takes it it home they connect to the router but have no internet. i have created a batch file to clear out the cache and that works sometimes.

I am stumped as to where to go next, i know it has something to do with being on a domain but can not figure out what. Help please

If on a domain, they are logging into that domain. They need to log into a user account that is not on the domain.

More info is needed to help you. Can you get us an ipconfig for the computer when it is off the domain?

Go to start / accessories / command prompt and type:
    ipconfig /all

well it is your lucky day. i just spent 45 min working on this system at the users house. ip config gave no info that was unusual. i was able to ping a dns server outside of the router using the ip address, however it does not ping a domain,ie:google.ca my next plan of attack is to take it off the domain and then show the user how to log on at work to access her domain files. i will let you how this works.

Are these laptops on static or DHCP? have ye tried ipconfig /flushdns?

To access the work related network, you should use VPN, or direct access. Also, may want to add under their tcp/ip dns entries (append these dns suffices (in order)) and add your domain in their. For example. foo.com

Otherwise, they'll have to use the FQDN to access network resources.

In addition, it appears like it can ping an external dns ip, but, can't resolve. So, this is a DNS issue.

yes i tried all the ipconfig commands. even entered the isp dns server into the tcp/ip properties. best i got was pinging the ip address of the dns server for isp and getting a responce.

So, again, it sounds like this is NOT dhcp. But, static, IPs. What happens if you were to set them to static?

We have quite a few laptops at work, that are all set to DHCP, also, they are on a domain. Log on locally, all is fine. Get into VPN, goot to go.

Then we also have a few (40+) laptops that use net motion: http://www.netmotionwireless.com/
This software is awesome. Uses whatever connection ye have, to get on the domain. It can auto switch from wireless, to lan, wan, wifi, etc. Not dropping a packet. Quite awesome, but expensive.
