I have lost my IP address on my PC. I am currently using a laptop for the internet, when I check the IP address I get 0.0.0.0. I am using Windows XP on a Sony Vaio computer. Any ideas on how to restore it.

    Thanks.

    Try the following:

Click start, then run, the type cmd (press enter)

    type in:

    ping 127.0.0.1

    your results should say:

    <code>
    C:\>ping 127.0.0.1

Pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

    Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
    </code>

If not, your nic may not be installed correctly.
    If so, type the following:

    ipconfig /renew

If an IP shows, you are good to go, otherwise try downloading and running the following:

I typed in the Ping 127.0.0.1 and received the results you said I should have. After that I typed in ipconfig/renew and received the following message:

An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection: The System cannot find the file specified.

I ran downloaded the program you linked and ran it and I still do not have an IP address, I just ran the Ipconfig/renew and received the same error message.

Is there a chance I have a virus or something that has wiped out my IP address? Also, this started after the PC was unplugged overnight during a bad lightning storm. Even though I have a good surge I unplugged it due to the severity of the storm, when I plugged it back in I could not access the internet, but my laptop wouldn't either. I contacted my provider and there was a problem on their end, they fixed that and the laptop works fine, but the PC still doesnt have an IP address. Do you think it is related to that?

    Thanks.

    Two things to look into:

    1) Is your network cable plugged in?

    a) Do you see a light showing where the network cable is plugged in?

If not, then, either the cable is bad, or do you plug this into a router/switch?

Also, a quick thing to check is your device manager, does your network adapter section have any red X's?

I have tried two cables and get the same results, and they are the same cables I have been using on my laptop. I have also tried connecting with the USB cable and still not luck. I am using a DSL with a modem, there isn't any additional routers or anything connected. I checked the device manager and no red X's and everthing seems to be performing correctly. If I go to Control Panel and Network Connections the area connection shows enabled and connected, but if I right click and check the address I get IP address 0.0.0.0. If I hit repair I get an error message saying it cannot be repaired. I am using the same modem for this laptop, I just keep switching back and forth, so I know the modem is also good.

    Thanks.

I'm not much of a DSL guy, but when you check under TCP/IP, are you using DHCP, or a static IP?

Or, try uninstalling your DSL software, and re-installing it. Other than that, I'd say, shutoff your computer, shut off your DSL modem. Wait 5 mins, then turn on your DSL modem, wait 5 mins more, then turn on your computer.

Also, is your house using one of those DSL dongles that parse the connection from the wall to your computer and splits to your phone? Or are you one of those users (like me 5 years ago, but not anymore, since I'm using cable) where the whole house was set for DSL connection?

I am thinking about switching to cable myself, I have had issues with this provider once before. The TCP/IP protocol is set to Obtain an IP address automatically and to Obtain DNS Server address automatically.

THe set-up has the DSL modem by my PC, the phone line is run through a splitter and then each phone line in the house that is connected to a phone has to have a DSL filter for it. It is kind of an annoying system when I think about it. Like I said, the laptop is working perfectly and so was the PC before I unplugged it. I tried unplugging for 5 and starting everyting seperately but it didn't seem to help, I will try it again, maybe I will get lucky this time.

    Thanks.

Wheucn I checked the Help and support page I am getting a bunch of failed systems. When I expand them they all say Unable to connect to WMI service\root\cimv2'

What do I use to assign a static IP address to the DHCP server, and how do I do that?

Is there a way to obtain the latest service pack for XP without an internet connection? Will it download onto a CD?

I am still getting the same error message and problems I was getting before.

    Thanks.

you can download SP2 from there then burn it to a CD then install it onto your computer

afaik if your ISP assigns you an IP then assigning yourself a static IP isn't going to help

type ipconfig /all in the command window maybe that will give us a hint .. .maybe post a screenshot of those .. try enabling the Windows Management Instrumentation(WMI) service ??? (control panel>admin tools>services)

I have been out of town lately, so I am responding late. I burned an update disc of SP2 but when I installed it I got the following error message:

    update.inf crytographic service problem

Also, I went to My Computer and went to Services and Applications/services/ and checked both my DHCP Client and my DNS Client and both are stopped. I tried to restart but I get an error message. Also, in Path to Executable the field is empty. When I click on Dependencies on the DHCP Client I both fields are empty and I get an error message saying it is dependent on other programs and a reference to WIN32.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

I am still having the same issues as above with this computer, except I was able to get online once last night and everthing worked correctly, but when I rebooted the system it quit working again and I continue to have the same problems. I also tried a MSN fix for the Cryptogenics problems when trying to download windows updates and it didn't seem to work. I have also noticed that when I go to Device manager and check my Realtek driver it says the device is working properly, but also says the device in not digitally signed. Would installing another NIC card get me around any of these problems? Also, if I tried the System Restore function that is supposed to restore the computer back to factory functions would it fix these problems? I am really ready to get this thing fixed.

    Thanks.

yea .. try using system restore and set it back to a date when you did not have this problem

when you posted the output of ipconfig .. did you purposely put 0s in place of what it was?(you don't have to give me the actual numbers, in fact ... don't) ... also it appears your computer thinks it has two ethernet devices.. when I'm guess you only have one

other things you might try is start>run> type cmd> type ipconfig /renew ... failing that goto network connections (right click my network places>properties) and delete all your connections, then run "New Connection..." in the File menu

Thanks, I will try that. Actually I didn't add any 0's, that is what came up when I ran the ipconfig/all.

I'm no expert when it comes to XP but I've come across a similar problem with W98SE and that required going to Network under Control Panel then selecting your network card under the configuration tab. Next select properties and next advanced and changing the Duplex settings to some thing other than Auto Negotiation (half Duplex for instance) and see if that helps. ;)

Although I didn't read this thread in great detail I had this same problem with my DSL connection a few days ago and had already tried some of what I see has been suggested to no avail. We have 2 computers one with XP the other with ME, only the XP machine was affected after installing the latest security fixes. I was unable to even get to the modem control panel via typing 'launch modem' in the address bar.

The simpelest thing is what fixed mine so it's worth a shot if you haven't tried it already. Unplug the power source for the modem, wait 5 to 10 minutes, plug it back in and using a pencil or pen push the little reset button (hopefully your modem has one) and wait for it to cycle. My connection has been fine ever since doing this.

You may want to look through the following thread for more clues:

Didn't realize the original poster posted again in the networking portion. I found out they had some missing registry entries within DHCP and dnscache.
