no iTunes

I had found virus' on my kids laptop. I rebuilt the registery and things seems to be ok except my current version of itunes is not working. I tried to install itunes 8 but that doesn't work as it can't uninstall the older version. So I went to Control Panel, Add/remove software and attempted to uninstall iTunes myself. That operation failed.

The pop up window is titles Windows Installer.
The message is

The file C:\documents..~\...\ iTunes8.0.1.11\ is not a valid installation package for the product iTunes. Try to find the installation package iTunes.msi in a folder from which you can install iTunes.

So I found that file and pointed at that but still no go. Any ideas?

You need to properly uninstall it first. Try using this

I tried the windows clean up as you suggested and that did not help to uninstall the older version of iTunes. I also just installed .NET framework 2.0 (upgraded from 1.1)
any more ideas?

Tried removing it in Safe Mode?

 

Have you tried re-installing the older version again?

 

This has been resolved. I needed to remove Apple Software Update by using Windows Installer Cleanup utility listed in this thread.
