Hi, I had to re install the OS on my mums laptop. Its a Dell latitue D600 with Windows XP pro. I used the disk that came with the computer to re install the OS and all applications.

Now I cant get a connection to the internet, wired or wireless. In the network connections (LAN or High speed internet area) there is no icons.

Can anyone tell me how I get my connection back.

    Thanks in advance

I tried the MS procedure but had no joy. I started again from scratch as I found that I have to install the drivers in a certain order from the dell support site. I have now done this and have got icons for LAN and WLAN now but I still cant get a connection. There is a red cross over the wireless connection icon in the system tray and a red cross + wireless connection unavailable next to the icon in the network connection area.
It is a Dell wireless WLAN 1450 Dual Band Mini-PCI Card that is installed. I have looked in device manager and it says that this device is working ok. The modem/router is a Livebox provided by orange and i have no problem connecting my own laptop to it wirelessly.

I will update to SP2 if an when I get it back online.

    Any other ideas?
    Thanks again

If you reinstalled everything there might be a conflict with the Dell wireless card connection service and the Windows wireless service. Here's a link to a procedure for shutting down the Windows service. See if you can connect then.

Hi thanks for your help so far, I have been trying to get this sorted over the weekend but still no joy. And I have emailed DELL 3 times and still no answer.
This is what I have done.

I opened the windows wireless utility by right clicking the 2 monitors in the system tray and unchecked the "Let this utility manage the wireless network". The red cross that was on the 2 monitor icon disappeared and bubble then appeared from it saying wireless network available and when I click it the wireless network connection window appeared with my livebox name in the available wireless networks section. I entered the network key(WEP) and hit connect and nothing happened. After a few seconds the bubble appeared again saying wireless network available. When I clicked to open the wireless network connectoin window this time the network key is stored so I hit connect again and the same thing happens again..continuously.

When I have the wireless network connection window open, if I hover the mouse over the blue bar icon(This is icon for DELL network card utility) or the 2 moitor icon they both say wireless connection unavailable even though my livebox name is in the available wireless networks section.

I clicked the advanced button in the wireless network connection window and get the properties window. under wireless networks tab the use windows to configure my wireless setting box is checked and my livebox name appeares in available networks. Under the general tab in the connect using box it says DELL wireless WLAN 1450 Dual band WLAN mini PCI card. and in the connection uses the following items area has Client for MS newtworks, lile and print sharing, Qos,AGEIS protocol and internet protocol.

I turned off the WZC and got no available wireless network until I turned it back on..
Can you see any reason why it still wont work?

My own laptop still connects to the router no probs.

    Cheers

Check the battery in your mom's laptop. D600's are one of the machines with potentially bad batteries. Go to www.dell.com battery recall.

In General, you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation( http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost ).

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS, http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify

If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack, ( http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet ).

Once you ascertain that the Network settings per-se are configured correctly.

    Wireless, check the basics.
