no matter what i do i can't update some programs

I tried to update real player,and a few other programs, but after pressing the update button in real player and going thru all the motions for updating I keep getting a message that says my protection is set too high. I set all my internet settings to default, but I still cannot use the downloaded updates. It' s driving me crazy. I was thinking maybe something was either checked or unchecked in the internet settings and I wouldn't know what to look for to correct it. I did add the programs to the firewall allowable list but it didn't help...
Can anyone help? I really would appreciate some suggestions...

You could try downloading and saving the updates, then disconnect from the Internet, disable all your protection, and try installing then. Also check your security settings - the default may be too high for your updates. Is this the first time you've had this trouble? What might you have done recently to cause it? Do you need, and do you have, administrator privileges?
