It finally happened after all these years I have given up Norton. I've been a user for many years and as a habit just kept using it. I finally ran out of license and ripped that band-aid off. It kept getting worse and worse, but since the life lock addition, I had enough. I used the Norton removal tool, rebooted, then I got a pop up to reinstall Norton, that only solidified my decision. Another thing they wanted $104 to renew, where I could go anywhere get it wayyyyy cheaper, such a rip off.

The thing that convinced me about them is how much trouble I had removing them from am older computer. They tend to forget who the computer belongs to.

    Just click "Yes".

    What could possibly go wrong?

The latest tests on AV suggest that Defender is the best anyway as it caught 100% of 0 day infections.

I haven't looked at AV comparisons lately, just feels good not to see that in the sys tray.

When you click yes, I'm not sure they are agreeing to the same thing that you are agreeing to.

I don't remember asking for sex.

AV's are no longer critical......most are as good as each other.

Its where you go and what you click that matters!

Read that about the crypto miner a few days ago too. I mean, when you have a large 'bot net' under your control why not put them to work making more money for you?
Norton has gotten so desperate, they charge quadruple for renewals, they push products like Life Lock, now they are creating their own super cluster to make them money. No Thanks.
Renewals are outrageous, they prey on people who don't know any better - you can go to Staples or New Egg and buy a new version (key) for cheap, they are no better than those Indian scammers.

Norton software is good but not excellent. Bitdefender, ranks as one of the top three.
And one should not have to pay more $50.oo bones per year for any fine AV.

I Never use Anti-virus software mainly due to the fact most of them are bloatware now. Some say you have a virus when you really don't.They hit on stuff that is normal.I agree with Replicator i even disable the windows defender crap mainly due to the fact it tends to spike the cpu for no reason.Real-time annoyance if you ask me.I only scan when i need to if you have less resources like less then 4 gigs or 8 gigs of ram their is no point on the system continually to scan.It will just slow the system.

Norton lol Of course, Norton isn’t offering this mining service out of the kindness of its heart. The company charges a high 15% fee off the top and an additional fee to transfer your currency to another wallet, so the company stands to make decent money off of its mining tool.it's called Rip off.

Since BitDefender Free version is retiring, what other free recommendations are there apart from MS built in Defender?
PS: I used to use and have used Avira and Avast in the past and switched to BitDefender only because it does not have any ads like the other two.

I know free is good, but if you look around you can usually find a really good deal, isn't it worth your piece of mind? Newegg runs deals, I never pay 'retail', right now 1 year is 9.99:) Yeah, I am using Bitdefender.

Paying for 'real time' protection is worth it I guess........If you need it?

If your online habits are sound, then malware sig's from the cloud are suffice if you want to run a reputable freeware app that offers this. (no need to download updates)
    Always have a backup dude!

Ya, I installed Kaspersky Security Cloud which operates on the cloud but also works offline and is free.

In case anyone here thinks our own US government has no interest in 'building ties' (financial or otherwise) with our companies, trade groups... he/she is in sad delusion (and perhaps even wilfully so)! Just for starters, read up on our own government's role in AES encryption - one of the most popular encryption methodologies/tools around!

I have stayed away...far far away...from any Norton products for the simple reason that once installed the app(s) they push are like sticky fly paper! So so difficult to get rid of!

Question: What about McAfee as anti-virus software? For several years now, I've used various McAfee versions, currently have installed LiveSafe-Unlimited. Reason I've trended toward McAfee is I discovered an inexpensive means and opportunity to obtain subscriptions, mainly on Black Friday at Office Depot. For $10 a copy, LiveSafe allows an unlimited number of installs which is without a doubt the best buy in town. This allows me to protect all of my desktop and laptop computers as well as cell phones.

I have this and the only reason it's still on my pc's is because I paid for a year. Honest to god, the amount of push messages about their other services annoys the everliving sh.. out of me. It is a good AV in terms of what it catches and how much of the pc it uses, but I'm not renewing my subscription to them.

Having said that, could be worse, could have used Kaspersky.
