Hello! I am new to this web, so far I find it pretty interesting.
But let me get straight to the poin. I have a pretty old pc at home
that was gifted to me... Model # Compaq 5bw220
it runs windows Millenium. I have tried to intall all posible drives from
the compaq website but no luck with internet connection.

The pc didn't even have a PCI adapter. I went ahead and installed one. Although device manager says it's driver is up to date. OS is not picking it up. There is a little compaq logo on the right hand side of the desktop, it seems to be what would be use to set up the LAN connection.... I double
click on it but I get a message saying "NO NETWORK CONNECTION".
If I do right click on the logo once more it prompts me to the properties channel and it shows four tabs. connecction, content, export, security and advance. Under the connection tab, I click on help and it shows the leyend for "NO NETWORK CONNECTION" (if you are using a permanent connection, you must connect to tte internet via your LAN before you can perform channel updates). In conclusion I just can't get the internet to work, even thought ethernet cable is properly connected to the modem and modem is working perfectly fine. In addition I have two other laptops with wireless internet throught the same modem/router. (comcast)

Could any one PLEASE.... help me out figure this out?

    Welcome to MGs guitarhero.
Couple of possibilities. (And take these with a grain of salt. It's been awhile since I've seen ME.)

Is the NIC you installed the only network adapter shown in Device Manager? If not, uninstall the other adapter and see if this clears up the problem.
(I would not worry about dial-up adapters at this point if they happen to be in DM.)

Possibly the Compaq connection software is fouled up, can you go into Services and Stop that service. Or alternatively, uninstall the software in Add/Remove Programs and let Windows configure the connection.

This is way out in left field - Disable Media Sense - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260953/en-us?spid=6519&sid=184#appliesto

Hello Ibmest and thanks for your replay>.
I have gone over your instructions but no luck.
I've removed this other component under Device manager and rebooted the pc but didn't do it. I also went into add/remove programs and removed the service connection
and rebooted the pc once more. Still didn't do the trick. :(

On the desktop there is this one icon by the name of Compaq Connection Helper.
I really don't how I would handle it but let me briefly explain to you what it's got:
    5 Tabs
    Access Connections
    Web browsers
    Email
    News Reader
    Advance
If you can think of anything else please let me know. I'll greatly apreciate it.

It's made by "Linksys". 10/100 EtherFast PCI Adapter
    Model number:
    LNE100TX standards
and then down below it shows this other description
    IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u, PCI 2.2, ACPI, and PC99

    LEDs
    Link/Activity, 100Mbps
    Dimensions (W x D x H)
    5.25" x 4.75" x 0.88"
    (186 mm x 154 mm x 48mm)

do you believe I could wipe out the OS and install XP on this pc?

Here are a couple of links for the Linksys adapter.

Linksys Driver Files - different versions

    Installation Instructions

You need to determine what version number your card is for the appropriate driver. There are instructions on the driver page to find out the version.
I would download the driver file to your desktop and browse to it when you do a driver update from Device Manager.

If you are just going to use this comp for surfing and email, depending on how much RAM is installed, it would be semi-OK.
If it has less than 256 MB of RAM installed, I would not bother with a format and install of XP.
See if you can get a driver working for the NIC and go from there.
