No Network - Error Code 39

I am trying to fix a friend’s computer but I am stuck. I cannot get the network adaptors to work. All the adaptors show a yellow exclamation in the device manager. When you look at the details for the adaptors they show an error "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be missing or corrupt. (Code 39)” I have tried uninstalling the network adaptors and reinstalling the drivers from the Dell website but no luck. I have posted on the malware forum and went through all the advised steps to get a clean bill of health. The computer had some malware / viruses before i started wo work on it. From here I do not know where to go. Any help is appreciated. The computer is running Windows XP.
