I have two computers separate rooms all hard wired cat5. They are connected to a verizon fios internet router. Before I did a new build of my computer everything worked fine. Now the computers can't see each other. Both computers connect to the internet with no issues. All connections are fine. Both computers are Win XP. I have done the network set up on both computers. When I click on view network computers, each computer only see's itself in the workgroup. Any clues? Thanks

the workgroup thing is what you want. they both need to be in the same workgroup. windows by default puts them in the workgroup 'WORKGROUP'. you can check this by right clicking my computer - properties - computer name tab - click change. make sure theyre both in the same workgroup, case sensitive.

make sure your firewalls are off when youre trying stuff out.
also make sure you have a shared folder with permissions set correctly.

How do I ping? Thanks for your assistance. This is probably somthing simple I am over looking. It's hard wired, can't be that difficult. It's something to do with my new build.

make sure your windows firewall and any other software firewalls are off.

in the run box, type cmd and hit enter. command prompt comes up.
type ping 192.168.0.1(or whatever the ip address of the other computer is)

to get the ip address, type ipconfig in command prompt. looks like this

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.13.104.1
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.13.104.254

update...I will do what you just suggested, but I can now see my computer from my wifes computer, but is says access denied. I can't see my wifes computer at all. I have the windows firewall turned off. I have a router, but have never messed with that. My other computer prior to my new build networked fine. Let me try the ping

I ping my wifes and it returns 4 packets sent and 4 received. I ping my computer from my wifes computer and it times out saying 4 sent and 0 received.

hmm turn off firewalls on both? have shared folders to access on both with permissions set? i dont know if any kind of antivirus software prevents it, but try turning those off as well. file sharing usually just works with a shared folder and permissions set. go into the run box and type \\ip of your wifes computer so \\192.168.0.1 or whatever.

i dont really have any other ideas for you man, sorry. dig into some settings but make sure if you change something and it doesnt work, be sure to change it back once youve tried the possibilities.

You never gave the results of doing the ipconfig status:

    On both computers:

Go to start / run / type "ipconfig /all" without quotes and note the space.

Post the results from both computers.

Have you tried using My Network places to map the each others drives?

Map both drives? I am not sure what that means so I probably haven't done that. What should I check? Thanks

I did that on both computers and everything checks out fine. My wifes computer can see mine occasionally, but can't assess it. My computer never see's hers. I have all firewalls off and both C drives in the share everything mode. This all started the second I built my new computer. I was able to network both computers one time, but never since. Do you think it would have anything to do with the network drivers on my computer? Both computers have no issues with the internet. They are both hard wired Cat5 to a Verizon fios router.

Well I downloaded network magic trial software to see how it would work. When it also couldn't get in to my computer but could access my other one, it said that Comodo firewall was blocking access. I don't have that firewall turned on so I uninstalled it completely and now network access to both computers is blazing fast. Apparently turning off Comodo didn't really turn it off. I just wanted to post my findings in case anyone in the future has a similiar issue and ever had Comodo firewall installed. Thanks for everyone's assistance.
