    Therein lies your problem.

How old is the computer before I give a suggestion?

    Nevermind. Here ya go.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283

    You will want:

Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC", ACPI PIC HAL (Halacpi.dll)

This has some risks--back up data to be safe.

haha no problem, so does this mean i have to reinstall windows?

No, probably not. Although thats the "correct" way to do it.

Just go through the update driver procedure.

Go into Dev Manager, expand computer, right click Standard PC, choose update driver.

    Wait, I am sorry, I mis-spoke.

    Yes, you do.

If Device Manager gives you the option, great, but Ive a feeling it wont.

While reinstalling sucks, at least you know the cause.

When installing XP, when it says to Press F6 to load raid drivers, or whatever, tap F7 a few times to get to the HAL choices, if its not correctly choosing it for you.

Also, make certain ACPI is enabled in the BIOS!

so I got a copy of that dll off google but device manager wont let me choose it. its looking for inf file how can i use dll?

    It wont work that way.

Here is a quick and dirty rundown.

The HAL determines how the OS will communicate with the hardware. You can go from ACPI to Standard, or a type of ACPI to another type of ACPI( like muliprocessor), but not standard to ACPI.

Its too different. It changes how power management works, how hardware is handled, and even how IRQs are treated. Any manual tricks will end up with a non booting OS.

Getting ACPI Hal installed will fix your battery woes though.

I hate to be one to tell someone to do a new installation of Windows to fix a problem :(

Do tell us how it ends, ok?

I really appreciate ur help and it seems like this would fix my problem but how do i install it when I format...does it have to do with pressing a certain fkey in blue screen setup?

    Usually, no.

In this case, I guess you will need to.

First, check the power management section of your BIOS and make sure ACPI is enabled, aka Advanced Configuration and Power Interface.

If it wasnt, then thats the entire problem.

If it was, or there is no way to change it, then you might need to do some manual manipulation.

Boot off the XP CD. Watch the blue screen when its loading files. When it says "Press F6, etc" tap F7 a few times. It will load a few more files, then come up to a screen where it says it cannot detect what type of computer you have, yada, yada. From here you should be able to choose your needed option.

If not, post back here and we will see what we can do, if anything.
