No "POST" Beep?

I just put together a new system using a ASUS M5A99X_EVO motherboard and noticed from the beginning that there was no POST beep. I believe everything is functioning properly, in that the board does go through the process of checking memory, drives etc., then boots up, but no beep.

This board has several indicator LED's ie: DRAM, CPU, VGA, SATA (Boot Device), that I watch light up as each area is being checked, then they go out when no error is found, and BIOS continues to move on until the OS is finally loaded, but, still no beep. At first I was thinking this was a "visual" thing with all the LED's flashing around but even the manual speaks of a POST beep.

I did have troubles during the install, do to a missing screw in one of the retainer brackets for the heatsink and cpu fan, that caused some minor bending of the cpu pins. Would this cause the lack of the beep?

I guess my real question is, does it really matter if the "POST" beep is there or not, as long as everything functions and the computer boots up?

:) Thanks gloozit! You were one of those that helped me select this motherboard about a week ago or so...and thanks for that, I'm more than happy with this build.

I got to thinking about the speaker when you mentioned it and if I remember correctly, the internal speaker usually came installed in the case, along with the case fans. I bought a antec 900 case this time and it only came with the fans...no internal speaker.

Also, it seemed to me that most MB's years ago came with a MB POST speaker already mounted on the MB. I guess they went the way of "legacy" parts!

I did notice during the build that this board came with a "Q Connector" to connect the front panel wires, ie: IDE Led, PWR SW and Reset SW. On the back side of this connector was also a location for Internal Speaker...which of course was left open.

I guess if it bothers me too much, I could always buy a POST test speaker and connect it to that Q-Connector, I could get one for less than $5 off of ebay!

Anyway, thanks for the quick response gloozit, I feel a bit better about this! I'm not a BIOS/MB geek and wasn't sure if the BEEP was necessary. And BTW, thanks again for your input on my new build choices...I couldn't be happier with this new system!!! Now it's playtime! :drool

When you say MB post speaker, do you mean one of these?

I looked at the manual and on 2-29, it looks like one of these could be used on the system panel connector.

I may be wrong. Can you confirm this gloozit? Thanks. I would like to know more about this as I may decide to do a build one day.

I was just showing how cheap those things are. In reality, my son has a friend with boxes of PC stuff. I could get him to give me one just because he's a good kid! ;)

tgell, I do believe the image you presented would work on the q-connector. It has pins for front panel connections on one side and pins for a speaker connection on the other side, such as: http://www.mysuperpc.com/build_your_own_computer/asus_m2n32_sli_deluxe_q_connector_system_panel.jpg

gloozit, I agree with you 100% on the shipping cost, it's just outrageous what is being charged and Radio Shack? Hmmph, they tick me off too, they ARE just a big glorified cell phone store. Fading are the days of DIY'ers!

Yep, Radio Shack is not what it used to be. Going back to the 70's, you could pretty much get anything there you wanted and if not, they would order for you.

That Q connector looks pretty neat. Install all of the connectors and then connect to the motherboard.
