No power to monitor after msconfig fiddle?

Hi all

Hoping someone can help. I am running Windows XP on a Dell workstation. Its pretty clunky and, in frustration, I turned off Azureus in Task Manager-Processes yesterday (despite destabilization warnings etc). When I used the PC next it was like there was no power going to the monitor.

I restarted and it came up with a warning that I'd changed a startup item in msconfig etc. I exited without restart but then the monitor went blank again.

I've tried starting in Safe mode - still blank. I tried a few other F-keys and the F-word. Still blank.

Any thoughts on what I (or possibly my three year old (she has a gift)) have done and how to fix it?

Hook the hard drive up as a slave drive in another computer, or use a linux boot disk to get in and reverse your mistake.

The machine should boot into Safe Mode regardless of what was changed in msconfig. Do you have a Windows XP disk?

And, the fact that you use Azureus (Vuze) always opens the door for possible malware infections (the 'clunkiness' you referred to) - something to think about.

Also, might want to update those video drivers in case they are fecked.

 

Good point - if we can get the machine booted, drivers should be looked at.

auntyjack, when you have the blank screen, is there any hard drive activity? Since you've got a three year old in the equation -D), you might also check your monitor cables, both at the monitor and at the computer.
