The search box at "start" has disappeared, Win+F doesn't bring it up, can't find "Search Indexer" options at Services either.
    Where else can I look?

I also don't see a "Windows Indexer" at Services.

It would help if you mentioned what version of windows you are running.

They're both disabled by default (probably because they're the same resource hogs as Vista's), Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off > Check Indexing Service and/or Windows Search.

Agent Ransack or Everything would be my choices for a search tool.
